Society has moved on and as we have become as a society more liberal in our attitudes swearing has become more commonly used and is now seen as normal behaviour. 30 years ago the words **** and **** were never heard on TV and now they are fairly common place! It is not a social class thing either as plenty of Toffs swear like troopers!

I'm referring to my nieces and nephews, friends' children and any others that may be within earshot. I did explain this earlier.

Children cannot discern what is appropriate and what isn't and can't understand the meaning behind the words. They just copy. I don't think they should never be exposed to it, of course they will be, and when it happens it's an opportunity for the parent to educate. Believe it or not I don't talk about sex, murder or other adult subjects in front of young children either.

It's only been 3 years! I can't believe that could have happened in such a short space of time. Good lord! It's only a matter of time before schools start allowing the words in essays etc <laugh>

Somewhat amusingly, watching a match on sky last week Patrice Evra had a close up camera directly on his face and a mic close by too when the ball went out for a throw and "****ing Hell!!!" came out in all its Mancunian splendor from a Frenchman <laugh>

Swearing is only acceptable in a professional setting if your profession is rock star.

I would hope not Yorkie, I would hope you would be a responsible adult in the circumstances, the same as I would hope of any adult with proximity to kiddies <ok> Although the chances are they probably know enough already to engage in a conversation about it.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was allowed now given some of the trendy liberal teaching methods that have been allowed to prevail but that's a whole new story!

I suppose there is a question here about the audience for not606.com and particularly the Ipswich forum and the Norwich one. I don't think there are any children that participate on the Town board although they may be reading. That said we are not here to do parents' Internet policing for them and they can find much worse than this if they choose to over in General Chat.

Nobody is perfect Thai, and everybody is different. I wouldn't swear in front of kids, but then again some of them could even teach me a few new words that they pick up from school!

Whats your take on women swearing? I know we are in this age of equality, but it just doesn't seem right.

The number of mum's that swear during children's football matches is appalling! Screaming banshee's some of them and to think they are as nice as pie afterwards. And then of course the Chelsea tractor mum's who think they can park anywhere and give you vile abuse when you object! <grr>

Guru - I am against women swearing and the more drunk they are the more I dislike it. Call me old fashioned but I like my lady to be just that - a lady! A dignified person that knows how to conduct themselves appropriately in just about all circumstances - it's a kind of utopia I guess but anything that falls close to that bracket is okay <ok>. Of course these days I have to believe my Thai wife when she says she is not swearing at her daughter when she yells at her in Thai. For all I know she could be calling her everything under the sun (I know I could someday's <laugh>.

I can count to 9999 in Thai and have a vocabulary of about another 30 or so words, none of which can be formed in to a coherent sentence <laugh>

There are some guys out here who have mastered fluent Thai I hold the highest admiration for them because it is an incredible language to get to grips with.

For those that do not know, they structure their sentences in the reverse order that we do, have no past, present or future tense etc.

So "This is my bedroom" becomes "bedroom me" and "This morning I went shopping" becomes "Shopping I go today".

To learn to speak it you have to think backwards and I just cannot do it <laugh>

my daughter is currently a Flt Lt. in the RAF. before she joined she (virtually) never swore. now it is common place for her to do so. i think it is so much more acceptable in modern society so much more prevalent.

I think swearing is used in so many different ways and can be used to abuse people (calling a woman a ****), to hurt people (you ****er), to praise people (you ****in beauty) and also as an expression of disbelief (I made a long put at golf this morning and one of the other guys said "lucky bastard").
I don't think you can ban swearing per se. I think people know when it is meant cruelly and action can be taken on its merits.
