it all depends what sort of money we are talking about. i would say no more than £2.5 million plus dobbie would be the maximum we should offer,
Shhh gas Dobbie is a decent player and I think Maynard will be good for Swansea as they can play football and will probably manage to stay in the prem
Have to agree Red. The couple of times I have seen Swansea play thius season, the football has been classical to watch.
Gutted if Dobbie is going but let's keep a sense of perspective here. Maynard is unproven at this level and I would not be inclined to spend a penny more than £2 million if Dobbie has to be part of the deal. I'm disappointed with Dobbie. The guy obviously has talent but there's something in his make-up that seems to upset his managers - first Sousa now Buck. If the guy had only applied himself.....
I'm gutted if we are putting Dobbie in as part of this deal, I know that there were problems with Sousa and Dobbie, and now Rodgers doing this, makes me question how some managers handle matters, man management skills is always a sign of a good manager, I'd sooner shift Lita, than Dobbie, think Rodgers is making a big mistake here!................ please log in to view this image
dobbie is a great championship player and would do well with the worzels but when it comes to the premiership then he is ok as a back up but as a regular then he is just not the standard we need, ill be sorry to see him go but he needs to play regular football and not when we want to play him which is not often. hope it comes off for the lad whether we go for maynard or not...
£3m for a player out of contract in the summer??? would he even be worth that with 5 years on his contract? 8 goals in 25 championship matches, bearing in mind the premiership is a massive step up in quality? we got miller for £880k and i'd have him over maynard any day of the week..
I think Dobbie isn't disciplined enough on the field, he drifts, which is fine when playing as one out of two strikers, especially when you're as technically sound as he is, but in a team that plays like the Swans you're asked to do so much off the ball which I don't feel he does. Having said that, like I say in a 4-4-2 I think Dobbie would be class, especially at NPC level, and I think he's got to be worth 1mil (scored the best goal of the playoff final, and another in the semi?) so I wouldn't want to pay more than 1.5 + Dobbie, sounds harsh but Maynard is unproven at PL level and only has 6 months left on his contract. I wouldn't open with that bid either, I'd be starting way lower. We got Graham for 3.5mil, he scored 27 goals for a team who finished midtable, so I don't see why Maynard would command a package anywhere near that. I do think that he's a good player, just I don't like buying in January, it's very hard to get value for money.
There are others involved. Wolves-Norwich-WBA allegedly offering Simon cox. So you have competition for him if you are after him.
So it looks like we've been offered Dobbie, Wood and Cox. All 3 good players and wouldn't mind any of them, prefer Woods or Cox as they are younger
Dobbie has bags of talent but is lacking in application and that has been apparent with a few managers but if he is to go i hope we do well out of it
Maynard is a good player, that goes without saying, but we will always have a contentious issue with signing strikers simply because of the system that we employ. For Maynard to come and sit on the bench, the amount of cash+player being bandied around does not make sense. And likewise, were he to become our first choice CF, DG becomes a £3.5mill benchwarmer and would probably request a transfer in the future, and, with his lack of first team action, we would have to accept a substantial loss on our initial outlay for him. Right now, I do not see the need for another CF in our squad. DG is, rightly IMO, our first choice, and Lita, Moore, and now Donelly are perfectly adequate back up which the club can afford to lose, if necessary. Signing Maynard would be a bonus, were the price substantially lower than that mentioned, but certainly not an essential purchase. Another couple of defenders and a winger would be far more use to us at this stage of the season, I feel.
Very well said, BAJ. I am now going to call you Badger, if reverence to my now coined acronym. Hope you don't mind.
Maynard would enjoy Swansea......right type of football for him........... Shame we can't keep him as I don't believe in selling our best players.......but for Maynard, it would be a good move and he will do well.
