Competition - Carabao Cup, EFL Trophy, 2nd Round
    Venue - Swansea.com Stadium
    Date - 28 August 2024
    Kick off - 7:45pm

Following their disappointing 1-1 draw against our noisy neighbours, next up for Luke Williams’ Swansea squad is a Carabao Cup 2nd round match at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Last Sunday, Callum Robinson came off the bench to score a late equaliser as Cardiff City fought back against arch rivals Swansea City to earn their first point of the season in the south Wales derby.

Liam Cullen fanned an already fervent atmosphere as he put the Swans in front after 10 minutes, pouncing from close range after Ronald’s volley was saved by Ethan Horvath.

Cardiff looked to be heading for a sixth derby defeat from seven after a listless first-half display, but manager Erol Bulut's substitutions instigated a marked improvement which culminated in a well-worked equaliser for Robinson.

That 79th-minute leveller transformed the mood inside the Swansea.com Stadium and, although the Bluebirds could not push on to find a winner, this draw will have felt like a triumph of sorts having lost their opening two games of the season at an aggregate score of 7-0.

This was also the first draw between the teams since 2020 and a relatively tame affair by derby standards - until tempers boiled over in added time.

Cardiff manager Bulut was sent off for refusing to hand the ball back and arguing with Swansea's players, before Oliver Langford handed out four yellow cards.

It was a messy end to a game which had seemed to be there for the taking for the Swans before Cardiff's revival.

The day before, Cameron Humphreys’ strike on his debut set Wycombe on their way to a 2-0 victory over Rotherham at Adams Park.

The Ipswich loanee struck with 20 minutes remaining before Kieran Sadlier kept his cool from the spot to secure Wanderers’ first League One win of the campaign.

The Swans have played Wycombe on 16 previous occasions, winning 7, losing 6 and drawing 3.

The teams last met in April 2021, in a Championship match, when the teams played out a 2-2 draw with late goals from Lowe and Cullen snatching a point in front of an empty Liberty Stadium:

Turning to tomorrow evening, much will depend on the strength of the team selected by Luke Williams (new signings Nathan Abbey and Florian Bianchini are both expected to start) and whether there is any hangover from Sunday’s South Wales derby.

Assuming a strong selection by Williams, I’m going for a 2-1 home win. <cheers>

Ben Toner will be the man in charge when the Swans play Wycombe tonight.

It will be the second time that Toner has taken charge of a Swans fixture, his first being the Championship fixture against Huddersfield Town in November 2022, which was his first-ever game in the Championship.

Toner, who hails from Blackburn, made his EFL refereeing bow in the League Two game between York City and Burton Albion in January 2015, before making his League One debut the following season.

On Wednesday, he will be assisted by Christopher Husband and Abbas Khan. Lee Swabey will be the fourth official.

I'm going with my daughter tonight - 3-0 to the Swans.

As an aside, she's going to be a mascot for the Leeds match - she can't wait !

Swansea City has completed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin on a short-term deal through to January, subject to international clearance.

The 36-year-old joins the Swans having most recently been on the books with Glasgow Rangers, and will provide competition and cover between the sticks while Andy Fisher is sidelined following surgery on a groin injury.

Fulton has been poor all season. Tjoe-A-On doesn’t look good enough. I can’t see what Williams sees in Abdulai. Vipotnik is hopefully getting ‘up to speed’ otherwise we’ve signed another dud <yikes>

76 minutes in, and not a single shot on target. Wycombe must think Xmas has come early.
