Following their disappointing 1-2 home defeat to Championship leaders Burnley, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a break from League action, and a trip to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City in the FA Cup.

On Monday afternoon, Burnley claimed a sixth straight Championship victory as Ian Maatsen's spectacular first-half double secured a 2-1 win against the Swans.

Following poor defending by Harry Darling which caused him to foul Nathan Tella some 25 yards out from goal, Ian Maatsen's free-kick went in off the foot of the post, putting Burnley ahead and he doubled the lead with a drive from outside the box. In all honesty, Benda should have done better, but Manning’s missed tackle in the build up was equally culpable in many respects.

Ollie Cooper quickly pulled a goal back for a Swansea side who had some good spells during the rest of the first half.

However, the Swans produced a disappointing and lacklustre performance in the second half, meaning that Burnley held on relatively comfortably, indeed they missed chances to extend their lead.

Burnley’s latest triumph - it is now 10 in their 11 league matches - saw Vincent Kompany's team move 5 points clear at the top, after second-placed Sheffield United drew with QPR.

More significantly, perhaps, the gap to third-placed Blackburn is 14 points.

The Swans’ third defeat in their last five games saw Russell Martin's team drop to 14th, though they made Burnley work for their win. Indeed, the Swans have just 1 win in their last 10 matches - 8pts out of a possible 30.

The day before, Coventry City and Bristol City shared the points as both sides played out their second successive draw at the CBS Arena.

Former Swan Jake Bidwell opened the scoring for the Sky Blues after 12 minutes, heading in from close range.

Antoine Semenyo drew Bristol City level just before the half-hour mark, slotting the ball in on the rebound for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Robins forward Andreas Weimann then saw a shot blocked on the line deep in the second half as the two teams failed to break the deadlock.

Bristol City, who had drawn 0-0 away at Millwall in their previous match, stayed 19th and, like the Swans, have only 1 win in their past 10 as manager Nigel Pearson tries to ease some of the pressure.

The Swans have played the Robins on 74 previous occasions, winning 23, losing 29 with 22 drawn matches.

The teams last played in the FA Cup in November 1996 in a 1st round replay at Ashton Gate when the Robins ran out 1-0 winners.

In the Championship fixture in Bristol in October, the teams played out a 1-1 draw:

Turning to Sunday, both sides will be keen to progress and hopefully secure a lucrative draw in the 4th Round.

The Swans have sold out their allocation of away tickets for the FA Cup tie at Ashton Gate, which gets underway at 12:30pm on Sunday.

Craig Pawson has been appointed as the referee for the match.

He will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Daniel Robathan. Keith Stroud is the fourth official.

 

What's the issue this time with Obafemi - is he still pouting over his Burnley move ?

 

He still wants to go to Burnley …..

Always going to happen given Martin’s reluctance to play him regularly - it’s going to make it difficult to persuade PL teams to loan players to the Swans if they aren’t going to be used

Seems that Cardiff are under a FIFA embargo rather than EFL:

"Mark Hudson finally clarified in his press conference today, that the club is under a FIFA transfer embargo not an EFL transfer embargo. That means we can't even sign free agents, or bring in loans if space in our squad opens up?"
