I think he might have a point. There is a different dynamic to all of the shortened forms of the game. That said, some of the shots played in T20 defy belief and bring something we have never seen before. You see it move over into the test arena occasionally and that is very exciting to see. There comes a point where T20 brings so much more to the game that the 50 over game can no longer compete. The T20's have gone from a crash bang wallop to a poised and measured game in a short period of time. It has quickly taken the space of the 50 over game. What can an ODI bring that a 20 over game cannot? As for the support in the sub continent, then if T20's were to take their place, I don't suppose they'd mind too much. Just look at the IPL to evidence that.
