Former Celtic and Aston Villa striker Chris Sutton says that Sunderlandsupporters should be happy to just stay in the Premier League.

Former Celtic and Aston Villa striker Chris Sutton has told BT Sport’s Football Tonight show that Sunderland fans need to be “realistic”.

Sutton believes that the Black Cats supporters should be happy just to remain in the Premier League and not demand more.

“I think fans need to get a reality check, Sunderland fans as well,” the 41-year-old told BT Sport’s Football Tonight show on Wednesday.

“If I were a Sunderland fan, every year we stayed in the Premier League, I would be happy. But fans want more and more, and that’s unrealistic.”

    Is Chris Sutton right?

Sutton is indeed right in saying that “fans want more and more”, but that is the nature of football.

However, to suggest that Sunderland supporters should be just happy being in the Premier League is not going to go down well with the Black Cats fans.

Sunderland are a big club, but year after year they seem to struggle for survival in the Premier League.

There is always the threat of going down to the Championship, and this is something that no one wants.

Sunderland are not going to break into the top six anytime soon, but they should aspire to be in a better position in the league table than they are now.

In football, as in life, progress is imperative.

Do you agree with Chris Sutton?

Might as well pack up and go home if you have no ambition.

    I agree with him

We just fur vied last reason, and undertook minimal investment this season

I think we aspire to be on the coat tails of the premier league gravy train and that's about it

But I also think almost half of the division is the same. The champions league is a closed shop between 6 or 7 clubs, the Europa league thing is a poisoned chalice

The rich clubs have protected themselves by creating the FairPlay rules .
There is now no way a club can be invested in like Man City and Chelsea without breaking the rules.

Doubt if you get very good odds if you wanted to predict the Top6 next season

None of us said we needed to be in the top 6 next year. Top 10 would be far better than what we have. Top 12 would make a nice change.

Also... I think we'd get absolutely great odds. We're hardly likely to be odds on favourites.

The gap between top teams and the rest of the table seems to be getting bigger any team from about 11th down could be a relegation fight if they go on a bad run

He can **** off. We're not allowed to hope for a cup win or a European campaign then?

All a squad needs is a few shrewd signings/a few decent players to come through the youth system and a decent manager.

    Southampton have shown that.

Presumably Southampton fans are entitled to their optimism?

Spurs must have the monopoly on breaking into the chase for Europe mate. I could have sworn they were in the relegation places a few years ago.

If they keep their players and sign 2 or 3 players to improve the squad then yeah, they can.

Lets face it. The majority of clubs are here to make up the numbers be it in a league or cup competition. Apart from the big 4 and Liverpool (at a push) the chances of success are minimal. It doesn't mean we can't hope or believe in our team. Disappointment does not equal delusion.

Another thing is. Sunderland are a northern team. A north eastern one at that! How dare we try to defy the odds. Keep the success in London or the north west! <grr>
