Some honesty from Lawro on poor officiating at the weekend - especially the 2 handball incidents that should have led to penalties and weren't given!!!! "For example, the handball by Marouane Fellaini in the Everton-Manchester City game. A penalty to City completely changes the game but they donât get it. In the Sunderland game against Norwich, Chris Hughtonâs men should have had a penalty when Danny Rose handled on the edge of the box. It wasnât given. In the Wigan game against Newcastle, Wiganâs winning goal was the most blatant of handballs. How was that not spotted?" All of these incidents could have a major impact on the top and bottom of the table and whilst referees and officials are demanding 'respect', then surely the fans who are paying good money to follow their teams should be getting an even contest in respect of decisions by the match officials. I share your frustration with officials who make the wrong calls and you can add to that the wrong offside call for Mirallas when he was clearly level BUT officials are human like us and are prone to making mistakes. Don't forget that it is easy for the pundits to sit in judgement when they have the benefit of countless replays, slow motion and an array of different camera angles to choose from. Officials have a couple of seconds to see the incident and to make a judgement call. I am a referee and have also run the line many, many times and it is a bloody hard job and sometimes a thankless task. I totally disagree with your comment about officials 'demanding' respect! It should be a given that they get respect and not having to earn it. Perhaps if footballers took a leaf from the Rugby players book on always respecting a referee irespective of the decision we wouldn't have all these problems. Rio Ferdinand in my view should have been banned for the total lack of respect that he showed the referee after the CL game the other week. Officials get things wrong but in my view it is down to the pace of the game and being able to be in a good enough position to give what they see. The pundits who are blaming Mark Hallsey for not sending off that Wigan player basically know nothing about football imo!
Excellent post JWM and someone said about rugby players last night. A work colleague pointed out that the tackle by McManan was accidental and I'm inclined to agree. I sympathise with you trying to officiate at football matches and I'm sure it is often a 'thankless task'/
McMannaman's tackle had to be accidental or it was just plain assault. Footballers do need to take a lead from rugby i would like to see a yellow for players other than the captain taking to the ref without the ref starting the conversation however refereeing needs to take a leaf from rugby too with video refereeing, we have the ability to get these decision correct far more than that they are and yet choose no to. Football must be the most backwards sport in the world from that perspective and the worst thing about it is there is the most money tied up in it.
Yeah but that's presumably because he's a **** tackler. For the record I'm not defending him. It was reckless and he should have been sent off, I hope he is suspended I'm just saying he's not exactly Roy Keane going in to intentionally break the guys leg.
