SUPPORTING QUEENS PARK RANGERS: AN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE Rafael J. Fernandez 16/11/2013 20:14 Iâm just like you when it comes to Queens Park Rangers. When it comes to the frequently used metaphors, Iâm right there with you. Like you, âQPR is my lifeâ, and âLoftus Road is my churchâ. Like you, I live and die with the SuperHoops every day, every week, every season. Yes, I really like to classify myself as âQPR Till I Dieâ. Yet, unlike you, I live thousands of miles away in a foreign country; not just down the road in West London. And unlike you, Iâm an American. No, not your English or British bloke who moved across the pond. I am like a real, 100% freaking American. A bloody Yank. A foreigner. And to some, at worse a soccer Neanderthal or w*nker. But that is where you are wrong. See for I never refer to the sport as âsoccerâ, and would like to believe that Iâm quite educated in the sport of football. But like you, Iâm a QPR fan, a fan of the SuperHoops, and a die-hard Queens Park Rangers fan. What is it like being a truly American QPR fan? Ironically enough it is probably just as much as being a QPR fan in England, Great Britain, or anywhere else worldwide. I first became enthralled with Queens Park Rangers in March of 2005. This was a season in which the club was back in what was originally known as the Football League First Division, but now changed to the Football League Championship Division. At the time I was serving in the U.S. Army in Germany, and was on a military pass for a week. For my pass, I decided a visit to London was in order. Thats a great read nines. It just shows that you dont have to be born in West London to fall in love with our club. He's clearly "one of us"
I can only echo what you've said Sussex. I really enjoyed it. It's a brilliant article. I'll tweet him the link to this page via our @Not606QPR twitter account Flanners.
I know what he is talking aboout - only i once did have a rather tenuous connection to Ealing. Now my family connections i n London are all Oxford U Charlton, WHU and Millwall. Glad I met QPR before I met my wife
In my limited experience of meeting American football fans, I must say I found them very knowledgeable on English football and QPR. The last time we were in the Championship, the ones I met knew we were top and about to come in to the Premier League. I don't think all Americans know about English football but the ones who do seem to really know their stuff.
Exactly this. A lot of the guys I meet that do know about football know we were relegated last year, and most know we're doing pretty well now. I'll be honest, it surprised me a lot - it's not as if we've got an American connection until very recently.
Great find Nines A good read and what a great bloke to have on your side in the trenches !! Welcome to the life of an international R's fan ! EDIT- I was walking through the shopping mall in Port Maqurie (yes ...where?) not so long ago and my kids were both wearing home kits. Some random bloke turned round and said.."Oh my god, QPR. I used to go and see them when i lived in Shepheards bush" A truely international following !!
I was talking to rafa this morning. he said he'll join the forum later when he wakes up! you can follow him on twitter @rafafernandez82
It's that shirt mate, truly unique, love seeing my little Sammy in his Dennis the Menace amongst the Barca, Liverpool and Scum kits.
I've been tweeting Rafa as well and told him to get himself on here....Seems like a great lad. ALL you R's abroad make me very proud lads..... 'Rangers here, Rangers there, Rangers every f****** where' has never rang so true
