Yes I remember walking over the Wear Bridge going to the games and seeing the ships being built on both sides of the bridge. It really was a magnificent sight and sad that it has now all disappeared.
Hadn't heard that before ! I can remember the shipyards and the huge cranes on the banks of the Wear. For me, walking over the Wearmouth bridge has always been part of the match day experience so I always park south of the river. When I'm driving up I always know I'm home when I see Penshaw Monument as I'm coming off the A1, or the North Sea as I'm driving up the A19 between Peterlee and Seaham !
The best thing that ever happened was when they shut down the shipyards, anyone that ever worked there will tell you that, they were horrible places, they might seem glamourous to people that have never been there but believe me they weren't nice places. I've worked in shipyards all over the world, the most primitive one being in New Orleans and the most modern one in Australia, but the ones in the N.E. of England compare with the worst - that includes Calcutta.
After readin the comments above i thought I'd watch a bit of 70's nostalgia, There was F^^k all of that - "a walk thru Sunderland "011". WOW I remember JL Thompsons. I remember (and worked in) the pit. Grow up. It was awful, dirty, demeaning work for all, BUT IT WAS WORK. Annoyed at this thread. x
Don't know why you should be annoyed mate, If you've worked in a shipyard and a pit then you've had the worst of both worlds. Unfortunately I'm still depending on ships for a living, thats exactly where I am at the moment, but I only have 3 weeks to go to retirement and I hope I never set sight on another floating jail as long as I live after that. On the bright side that gets me home in time for the season to start.
BC Well done. In a hard world and hard environment, really well done. Its those who don't understand am p*****d at. x
