Sunderland want Arsenal's Carl Jenkinson on loan
Sunderland are ready to pay £2m to sign Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson on a season-long loan, but they face competition from West Ham

    Arsenal's Carl Jenkinson
Sunderland are trying to hijack West Ham’s bid to land Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson on loan.

Right-back Jenkinson spent last season with the Hammers, and new Upton Park boss Slaven Bilic is keen to bring him back to East London next term.

But Sunderland are understood to have been in touch with the Gunners, and are willing to pay a £2m loan fee for the services of the 23-year-old.

And, despite interest from other Premier League clubs, Sunderland appear to be in pole position to sign the England international.

A loan deal is the best Sunderland could hope for, with Arsenal determined to hang on to a young English-born player whom they believe has a first-team future ahead of him at the Emirates Stadium.

Jenkinson’s chances with the Gunners have been limited so far, however, and he was allowed to spend last season with the Hammers, where he figured in 32 league games.

Sunderland’s new boss Dick Advocaat wants to add up to half-a-dozen quality signings this summer to avoid another relegation battle and, with veteran French full-back Anthony Reveillere released this week, Jenkinson would be the perfect replacement.

With Jenkinson on the right and Patrick van Aanholt on the left, Sunderland would have genuine pace at full-back.

And the versatile Billy Jones would be able to act as cover for both positions.

Carl Jenkinson attracts interest from Sunderland
That is according to the Daily Telegraph, who claim the Black Cats are willing to pay a loan fee of £2million for just one season.

West Ham, where Jenkinson spent last term, are believed to be keen on keeping him at Upton Park for the 2015/16 campaign.

That would make sense, nice cheap deal and instant improvement while we pile the bulk of our funds on permanent quality in more important areas like cb, a striker, a creator and pace further up the pitch.

I rate him so good news for me. You never know, if we did get him maybe we could work something permanent out, I'm not sure he's necessarily good enough to be an Arsenal regular but maybe Arsene has big plans for him who knows.

Dreadful deal. Loans should be last port of call if we miss out on our targets.

Let's flush 2m down the ****ter eh..

Kieran Trippier has a £3.5m buy out clause apparently.

Let's just buy some ****ing players man

Agree with this completely. We can get a fairly cheap player in the position from all sorts of places. This is lazy and bad business.

So would I but it not realistic. Maybe most of our funds are needed elsewhere. I know one thing. He's way way better than what we've got. If the money saved can go towards somebody who can turn our fortunes in an attacking sense or turn the heart of the defence into a brick wall I'm fine with that

We new we'd be using loans. Loans help us get player above our level, if it helps achive safety early that will set us very well for next summers window.

But if folk think we're going to buy 6-8 players outright they're in ga ga dreamland. We need to be realistic and not go on like we've got an open checkbook with an unlimited room on the wage bill. Fund distribution will be essential to getting the right players in the right areas. Potential fees and wages is a task Congerton needs to bend, mold and shape to work for us to strengthen us for the new season. That's all that matters to me. That we're better and can push on

There we go, Sam Byram. 4.5m for a player who's never kicked a ball in the premiership. No good for us next season. Long term maybe but for next season we'd back to relying on Billy Jones while the lad finds his feet. Tripper a better option than Byram but he can't pass for ****, maybe better at going forward than Jenkinson but so wasteful. Jenkinson represents the right balance for me, he's the cheapest option for instant improvement. I'd honestly pick the loan and look at permanent options next season.

Another signing to keep us up for 1 season !. Man city are putting together a £150 m deal for three players hehe, they were no bigger than us 5 years ago, yet we are no bigger than Swansea who in were league 2 about that time. When are we going to make the move ?. What next season, Bournemouth finishing above us.

I'm not as opposed to loans as some om here, and would be happy to see this lad come, but not at a £2m loan fee <yikes> he's not that good. We should be able to find better on a permanent deal for marginally more than that. Look at Janmaat, much better player than Jenkinson and Newcastle apparently got him for around £5m. And we're gonna pay £2m for this lad for one season?

I agree with di5co - this deal would represent terrible business and pure laziness from our scouting network.
