As the season approaches February, Gus Poyet's Sunderland need to start replicating their cup form in the Premier League, that's if they are to retain their top-flight status.

The Uruguayan's side play host to Stoke City on Wednesday evening having won just two of their 11 encounters at the Stadium of Light.

Depending on other results, Sunderland could move out of the relegation zone with a victory.

Lawrenson
Stoke battled well against Chelsea in their FA Cup tie on Sunday but they never really looked like getting anything out of the match.
Peter Odemwingie will be a good signing for the Potters because he adds something they have seriously been lacking this season, which is pace in their attack.
They have not been able to stretch the game at all and it has been too easy for teams to play against them.
Sunderland's problem continues to be scoring goals, and they badly need a home success in the league to go with their wins in the cups.
I am not sure they will get it on Wednesday, though. Stoke would take a draw now but it is not really much good for Sunderland.
Lawro's prediction: 1-1

Merson
I watched Stoke's cup game against Chelsea and you could really see their limitations. It was only 1-0, but they never looked like scoring a goal. However, I think they will be good enough not to be involved in a scrap - although if they lose at Sunderland it might look a bit dodgy for a week or so. Somebody needs to tell the Sunderland players that it's a cup game because they play better in those. The picture at the bottom could change so much over the next few days because a few teams have winnable games and this is definitely one of those for Sunderland. It's a hard call, but if Sunderland can play with the intensity they showed in the cups they should be able to sneak this.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-0

Stats n Facts
• Stoke have the worst away record in the Premier League this season with just five points from 11 games and a goal difference of -16.
• There have been red cards in three of the last four Premier League meetings between Sunderland and Stoke.

• There have been just five goals scored in the last four Premier League games between Stoke and Sunderland.
• Adam Johnson has scored four goals in his last two Premier League appearances.
• Johnson has scored or assisted each of Sunderland’s last six Premier League goals.
• 27 different players have started a Premier League game for the Black Cats this season; no side has given more players a start in 2013/14.
• Stoke have won 61 per cent of their aerial duels this season, by some way the highest proportion in the top-flight.
• Half of the 20 Scottish goals scored in the Premier League have come from Sunderland and Stoke (five each).
• Sunderland have picked up 1.1 points per game in the matches (12 games) Lee Cattermole has started this season but only 0.5 in those he hasn’t (10 games).

They have the worst away form in the Prem' we may well have the worst home form? No new players. Hope they don't get nervous. However we seem to be stronger second half these days. So if it's 0-0 half time I think we can take them.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jan/27/john-guidetti-angry-stoke-city-loan

John Guidetti, on loan from Manchester City to Stoke City, has expressed frustration about his lack of football under Mark Hughes and said the club will "have a problem" if he is left out of their next game, at Sunderland on Wednesday.

Guidetti, desperate to resurrect his career after a freakish illness ruled him out for the best part of two years, admitted being angry he had been an unused substitute in Stoke's FA Cup defeat at Chelsea on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Swede was a 79th-minute substitute in their game at Crystal Palace the previous weekend and told the Swedish newspaper Expressen: "It's been two games and we haven't scored. What is the worst that can happen [if I came on], that I don't score, or … ? We have to see what it is like for the next game, otherwise we have a problem."

Guidetti had missed training towards the end of last week because of a stomach complaint but said he was ready to play. "You are a bit angry [when you are left out]. I feel really good and the training sessions have been as good as they could have been. I had a stomach bug, I woke up on the Thursday with something to do with my stomach. So I hadn't trained since Thursday. But still, I travelled [to Stamford Bridge].

"I know what's in his [Hughes's] mind, that it is about the stomach, that I haven't trained. I can understand that a little bit. But I got a lot of positive feedback after the last game. That felt good. I had minutes against Crystal Palace and everyone thought I did bloody well. Then you think you are going to get the chance again. If we'd been banging in the goals you maybe could understand it.

"It is a cup tie. It doesn't matter if we concede another goal. I thought it was a little … you're angry, I don't really understand it. I feel really good otherwise, training has been going really well. Then it is difficult to do anything when you don't get to play."

First Cabaye apparently on his way and now this...

Something seems to be unsettling every club we play atm! about 4 on the trot isnt it?

I hadn't given it a moments thought until today but it is plaguing my mind.

I'm ****ing well up for this game, so anyone around access 11 North Stand who is anti-swearing, sorry in advance.

I'm gonna say this right now, we are going to win this game and exit the bottom 3, Wednesday is the day.

Borini, Johnson, 2-0 the lads.

Seems to have found a new respect for us last few weeks does Merson, rarely predicting bad things for us, and to be fair, he clearly has been watching us, cos rather than standardized ****e (Jamie Redknapp...) he seems to pick out spot on flaws and things that we need.

I'll take any ****ing win mate, after the 'whatever happens, happens' joy of Old Trafford, and the 'always gonna be ****e' match on Saturday, this game is ****ing massive for us.

Time to step up, big time.

I hate to say it but he's right, we need to be show some cup mentality. We need three points from our home games, not one point. They need to see it as three points is the only option here.

Totally mate.

Winning the cup and going down would be just awful, and utterly pointless.

We'd have that European football which SHOULD be a catalyst for next level signings, but we would be in a lower league and it would be neutralized.

A cup win plus survival, and then it's up to Ellis how far he wants to run with this club, Euro football is the be all & end all for top players, but they will not entertain playing Barnsley.

Exactly. We need to win the bread and butter games or we will go down.

The amount of games Wigan have to play is scary they've already played 36 games and will have to play at least 58 games this season <yikes> That's going to hinder any teams chances of coming straight back up in an unforgiving league like the Championship.

Thinking back we owe these bastards and the arsehole mark Hughes!

Wes Brown was sent off for making a fantastic tackle thanks to inept refereeing and Mark Hughes and his crew going on like bellends on the side lines. That and their ****e attempts at unsettling our players (a ploy also used against mannone by man united before the semi) I want us to shove it right up Stoke. Ha'waaaaaayyyyyyy

We're due a game at home where we score early and can relax 3-0 up by 60 minutes.

The supporters deserve the chance for a bit of a party.

Hopefully the results tonight will give us the chance to be out of the bottom three.

Our form is good, Stoke's is **** . . . . 3-0, haway the Lads!!!!
