Coe and Ovett were not easy acts to follow. Steve must have worked damned hard to become the next world No.1. The lad's earned his recognition, and I wish him well. Congratulations.

touche. he had a massive task to achieve with those 2 ahead of him. backin the days when British athletics was at its best - at least to watch (bar the Olympics). loved watching the 800 and 1500.

he's always been a good, very vocal and loyal supporter of the lads. he's a good racing commentator now, too.

well done Steve. not bad for a lad from Jarra.

I come across Steve Cram from time to time in his role of Chancellor at the University of Sunderland, and have got to say that I have been surprised at his aloofness.

I've heard something similar about Steve before. Funnily enough, about 15 years ago I came across Seb Coe and he had a tad too much ego for my liking too. But still, maybe those guys needed a bit of ego to go as far as they did. Who knows?

This has been my impression of him too, a snotty nosed bugger is how we used to describe such individuals, back in the day.
The legend that is Rowell also fits into this category imo.

Steve Cram is an arrogant, self-obsessed, toss pot. He has no traits of a proper Jarra lad and as far as I'm aware there's not many people from here who are proud to be linked to the same area as him.

He was **** anyways, whys he getting a medal?

Steve Cram celebrity fan.... Give me Jarra Elvis any day.

He was certainly one hell of a middle distance runner and held a number of world records in his time, so definitely wasn't ****e at what he done. However, as I said, has given me the impression that he is a bit of a snob when I have come across him..

Commander of the British empire (CBE). Hell of a middle distance runner though, great times in the mid 1980's with him, Coe and Ovett.

That's how I would have imagined him to be mate, but in his role of chancellor at the Uni he tends to ignore anyone that is not in a suit, or that is the impression he has given me anyway..

It's difficult for people in that position, the 'suits' get very grumpy if the 'VIP' speaks to anyone but them, especially the likes of us <laugh>

I've had some very awkward moments, one involved a VVVVVVVIP, remind me when I see you, it's funny mate.

You are dead right Mr RAW, he looks straight through you if you are thought not to be "important", It is a shame because it was not what I expected from him, or his position. I have been fortunate to have met a lot of Uni big wigs including the Lords (David) Putnam and (Ted) Short and they have been the very opposite, really strange, that Steve behaves in this way. It could be he is out of his depth, thats the impression he gives me.
