Sunderland are trying to hijack Aston Villa's bid to land Mathieu Debuchy from Arsenal.

Remi Garde has wanted the French right back to bolster Villa's back four all through this window but has been left frustrated by Debuchy's reluctance to provide him with an answer.

That has now opened the door for Sunderland and manager Sam Allardyce spent Monday in London trying to secure a deal with Arsenal and Debuchy that would take him to the Stadium Of Light.

Sam Allardyce has been in London to try and thrash out a deal with Arsenal officials

Should terms be agreed, Debuchy would join Sunderland on loan until the end of the campaign.

More like it. Billy Jones isn't close to PL fullback

This would be a fantastic signing if we pulled it off, up about 713 levels at RB.

    Ex-Mag don't matter, he's French,not Geordie, and he's a very good full back.

Good looking ****er too, if you're that way inclined.

Seems he's been stalling on Villa for a few days and now we've shown interest. Knows the area, a better chance of staying up. Could be a goer this.

I don't rate him loads defensively but good going forward and certainly better than what we already have.

    Would be a good signing.

Good signing no doubt but I really do wish we'd start focusing our attention on defenders who can DEFEND first and foremost...

Can he defend better than Jones? Yes, a decomposing sheath can put up a better defence. Plus Jones is in the JoS School of long ball to Defoe. Jones and Coates are his star pupils. Need that **** out of our team imo.

He's streets ahead of Jones and exactly the level of player we should be looking at. Knows the north east also so shouldn't be difficult to tempt. Just do the deal Sam.

He was once good enough for Arsene Wenger's first 11, then had a bad injury and lost his place to Chambers and eventually, Hector Bellerin, who's got the ability to defend well and push forward, plus has age on his side. Debuchy will want to force his way back into the France squad for the Euro's, probably hoping that they'll have a good tournament and he'll get a final payday contract... if he can displace Bacary Sagna.

Arsenal also have Calum Chambers who can play that role so I'd imagine the guy will leave during the January transfer window.

Villa currently have Alan Hutton there, and in their squad of players I'd put that guy somewhere near the bottom of players who need replacing... Garde looks like one seriously clueless manager if they're chasing MD.

I think Palace could try to attract him, with the Pardew link and the fact that Papa Soare is not a footballer.

This board if all of "in the know" people today.....Priceless. We might have "no chance" we also "might" not even be looking at him. But your contribution is duly noted and ignored.

Aston Villa are closing in on a loan move for Mathieu Debuchy until the end of the season after agreeing to a clause allowing Arsenal to recall the defender should manager Arsene Wenger deem it necessary.

The 30-year-old has started just two Premier League games this season and is desperate for first-team football in a bid to secure a spot in France’s squad for Euro 2016, which will be staged in his home country this summer.

The Gunners would prefer to keep Debuchy as cover but Wenger’s relationship with Villa boss Remi Garde - who was Wenger’s first signing after becoming Arsenal manager in September 1996 - has played a key role in the right-back’s proposed move to the Midlands.

Garde needs reinforcements as Villa attempt to avoid relegation but Arsenal have no other specialist right-back in their squad should Hector Bellerin suffer an injury.

Calum Chambers could deputise but Debuchy is a more natural fit and Standard Sport understands any agreement with Villa will include the option to bring Debuchy back to Emirates Stadium if the need arises.

Garde is willing to accept the clause if it is the price to secure a player of Debuchy’s experience and has guaranteed him a starting spot at Villa Park.

The only sticking point is that the two clubs are yet to agree a loan fee, which would be paid incrementally depending on the length of Debuchy’s stay at the club. Bayer Leverkusen are among a number of clubs monitoring the situation should the deal suddenly collapse.

Debuchy had initially been hopeful of joining Roma but manager Rudi Garcia was sacked nearly two weeks ago and the Italian club have since revised their transfer plans. Garcia and Debuchy enjoyed a successful working relationship together at Lille but the player has now been forced to pursue other options.

The Echo are reporting we're in for him now so it might be a goer.

Just shows how much Sam rates the 3 we've already got on the books (Jones, Yedlin & Matthews).
