Just been watching the highlights of this weekends airshow and its prompted this post.

Sunderland the city and people get lots of stick in the media, run down, idle work shy people, unemployed, grim and nasty, no the wonder players don't want to come.

Then I watch the air show, thousands of happy people, families with mum and dad, sunshine, fantastic beach and sea front and the opposite of the grim picture we read of.

Now of course those of us who know the area are well aware that the grim bit does exist, all cities have them and when a city is starved of funds like Sunderland is then it's hard.

We also know that the area also has a majority of good people, hard working people, family people, honest and decent people. We also have beautiful areas, shops, night life and despite their faults a council working hard to bring employment, business and growth.

So from me its a well done to everyone involved in the air show, organisers, business, participants and visitors for showing what the area is all about.

I wonder what the admission charge would be in other areas for our free show.

Reckon it's people being ignorant of not only Sunderland but, the North East in general as a dump where no one has a job and we just get bladdered all the time.

This! Outside of the North East, Newcastle gets its fair share of bashing too. In fact I hear less negative things about Sunderland than I do about Newcastle.

Oh you should have been down the Roker Avenue early evening, all the flotsam and jetsam making their way home, littering the streets with vomit, blood, empty cans, discarded food and kicking fledgling seagulls to death.

No doubt one or two cases will make it to the court round up but the majority will not.

When you are getting around a million people attending an event over a weekend period, you are certain to get a few idiots among them. However, on the whole I would say that the event went off superbly..

Compared to the East End of London Sunderland looks quite canny. No Olympic stadium, but the dog track will do :)

Living in South Shields I can tell you the local council state the obvious about no-one coming here & shops shutting, with brand names leaving the town. Mind you they have stopped charging for parking in the town, so I hear. I don't go into the town myself because it's a hole in the ground, King Street is a **** hole, I prefer the Bridges in Sunderland, it's not too far, it's clean & tidy, the security is visible, good shops etc. South Shields is nothing but a joke, no wonder people don't want to come here. You have it good at Sunderland, even the not so good areas are being dealt with. I had a look at a flat down Hendon way, Lumley Towers, I liked it, clean tidy & well managed, I envy you all

The trouble is in the same old places and no doubt it will be the same surnames that have been appearing in the court round up for the last 20 odd years.

I'm all for "social cleansing", round up these lawless lot and just put them on an island somewhere so the only lives they ruin are each others - you could also sterilise them to, prevent breeding and save hundreds of thousands in benefits.

    This mate.

What annoys me is that people outside the NE call everyone in the NE geordies -.-

And say we're all unemployed scroungers.

Sunderland is a cesspit. end of.

There's some good people here in Sunderland. This board is testament to that. That being said, the good people are matched and then some by a huge chunk of indescribable horrors that lurk this city.

I can't walk through our centre without being driven to dangerous levels of rage.

It's just simple stereotypes. Fact is, historically the North East was known for its hard labour, and right now Geordies and Mackems alike are doing similar jobs to Londoners and getting paid a lot less for it. London is the be-all and end-all financial capital and media district. It's like a black hole with exponentially increasing gravity.

I love the North East, the cities are brilliant and the people are, overall, very friendly <ok>

The low crime rates that are experienced within the city do not lend weight to your views..

I've always thought that compulsory sterilization of people appearing on the Jeremy Kyle show would do the world a lot of good. This underclass are in the minority at the moment but they seem to breed very well and Scum tend to breed scum. How long before normal decent people are the minority?
Ha don't mean to scaremonger but this does cause me concern at times. I getting paranoid in my old age!

You can't live in Pennywell any more because most of it has been pulled down.
