Opinions.....sorry to disagree with others on the other thread but I'm with O'Neil on this one. Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has criticised captain Lee Cattermole for getting sent off in their 2-0 Capital One Cup win at MK Dons. Cattermole collected the fifth red card of his Sunderland career for a reckless first-half challenge on Adam Chicksen. Craig Gardner and James McClean scored to take O'Neill's side through, but the manager was annoyed with his captain. "From the minute you start lunging in you are giving the referee no option," O'Neill said. "It looked from the sideline that the referee had no option. "You can't do it, we talked about discipline before the game and there we are, down to 10 men, it is a hard enough battle here and he didn't help himself and he didn't help his team. "He started the season off brightly for us and he's a great leader - but he has to have discipline himself. "There is no point asking for discipline from the team when you don't show it yourself." Gardner's tremendous 25-yard free-kick and an individual effort from McClean secured a relatively safe passage into the next round for O'Neill. He added: "I don't want to go overboard about it but it is good to win. "To win tonight was great, considering the circumstances of playing most of the game with 10 men." Adam Johnson made his comeback from a thigh injury, coming on with six minutes to go for his first appearance since 1 September. O'Neill added: "It was one of those where I wanted to try and give him just a feeling for things again. "In an ideal world, it would have been great if he had a little longer." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19724730
No good having a captain who spends half the season in the stands. It can be said that he is singled out by refs but his reputation proceeds him...unfortunately he probably deserves it!
So was it a professional foul or serious foul play? 1 game or 3 I'll be gutted if he misses the derby as he would no doubt be as ****e and moronic as he always is in it.
Wasn't a red for me, was watching the game and he kicked the ball too far and stretched to try keep it, although I admit went in hard... Not a two footed challenge, wasnt malicious or intending to hurt the player, was purely trying to keep hold of the ball... Hence, Chicksen is a c**t
Having seen it a few times now, I can't see how it's a red. It's a yellow for anybody who isn't Lee Cattermole, and the Dons player didn't half play it up, soft ****e.
Sorry mate but its a red imo. I'll defend Catts to the end but that was just thick. It's not like it was a goal saving tackle. It was a miscontrolled touch, while if had the ball just inside their half, that he then lunged into out of pure frustration to get it back. If he had just stood up to the lad, he'd have probably drawn a foul himself. It's was reckless and irresponsible Mons and has cost him and the team 3 games. He simply isn't learning and defending him is becoming very difficult.
I thought it was a red initially, but the view from the side it doesn't look nearly as bad to me. Was a bad challenge, if a genuine attemp to keep possession, but I don't see that as a red. The games full of puffs now.
He's just an idiot. He is danger of throwing away any thought of a career at the top level with this discipline problem. Regardless whether it is a red (probably is for me), the lack of thought and idiocy of his play is astounding at times. I actually think he's decent as a holder but he is pretty much useless with his current discipline. He'll learn the hard way with O'Neill because his patience will soon disappear.
15 to 20 years ago its not even a foul. Today its a straight red. I'm not saying its how I want it to be but all players know what the consequences for these tackles are and don't forget, at 24 if has played all his career under these 'softer' times. He is just ****ing thick at times which is sadly what he is best known for now and not the cracking player he more often is in reality.
Very true Cest, in fairness the rushes of blood are getting wider apart. Usually they are very much like last night, genuine attempts to retrieve a ball, maybe what he actually needs is work on his touch. I'm defending him still, although there'll be a limit.
How many times has he been sent of during his career & out of that, how many times has he been sent of while at Sunderland?
David Meyler says skipper Lee Cattermole doesn’t need to change his ways, despite a fifth red card for Sunderland. Cattermole’s status as Black Cats captain is under threat after a moment of idiocy saw the 24 year old see red for a reckless two-footed lunge on Adam Chicksen, in the Wearsiders 2-0 win over MK Dons. A divisive figure among fans, Meyler claims Cattermole doesn’t need to radically change his game, he told The Journal: “Everyone who knows Lee Cattermole knows he plays with his heart on his sleeve. “It was just a ball that he went for and thought he could win. The referee decided it was a red card and I’m sure the club will look back on it and see what they think. But Lee is gutted himself because he always wants to do everything he can to help the team. “It’s done now there’s nothing anyone can do. It’s not something we’ll not spend too long thinking about as players.”
He's still captain according to Martin O'Neill: http://www.journallive.co.uk/safc/safc-news/2012/09/28/61634-31923193/
