Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer, after failing to establish himself as a squad member for the Red Devils.

It has been reported that Sunderland are in pole position to sign the 24-year-old, with the asking fee believed to be in the region of £1m-£2m. Competition for the player's services is not expected to be of a fierce nature.

According to reports from Ed Aaron, the deputy news editor for Guardian Sport, recently-relegated side Sunderland are interested in signing the Uruguayan defender, who has just one year remaining on his United contract

    • David Moyes signed Varela during his ill-fated spell as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Old Trafford in 2013, but the player didn't make his debut for United until 2015. a horror-show performance against Liverpool in the Europa League did little to enhance his reputation, and current boss José Mourinho subsequently bundled the player off on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Mourinho had to deal with an extensive defensive crisis last season, and has made it his priority to invest heavily in that area ahead of the 2017-2018 campaign.

Victor Lindelöf has already joined United from Benfica, and Mourinho will be determined to build a solid back-four to help his side challenge for the Premier League title

Varela will be hoping to reignite his stalled career, which started brightly with some eye-catching performances for the Uruguayan Under-20 national side.

Now 24, the player will be determined to prove himself as more than a former wonderkid, and a spell with Sunderland in the Championship could be just the shot in the arm needed to boost the player back to top form.

When we've already got 2 championship quality right backs in Jones and Love why go for another one?

A winger or two and a couple of centre forwards would be nice……hang on tho, we have Borini, Lens and Khazri.

I don't think any player link has any credibility at the moment.

They'll all be leaving though, all worth something - about £20m from sales there.

I don't see anyone taking Love or Jones off our hands in all honesty.

Why the hell would we be linked to any player when we have no manager, and an owner desperately trying to sell?

There are no managers coming in until we sell.

There are no players coming in until we sell.

If we don't sell the club, the acting coach / manager will sign loanees or spend no more than a few mil.

Yeh you are right we are again in stailmate until the club situation is resolved
Speculation well speculation all means nowt
Link with this one that one
We will get nobody in until we are sorted.
Of course that will be too late and we will be playing catch up again.
Never mind I have my season ticket for the first time in five years.
Strangely enough when I had my season ticket for over ten years I will be sitting a couple of seats away.

Don't we also have Matthews as another right back or has he gone?
4 right backs does seem a bit excessive.
A pity none of them are up to much and may only be 'alright' at best in the championship.

Oviedo on the left is good enough but it appears he wants out.

Still, there's no hurry, it's weeks before the season starts.
If we get a new owner by sometime next month we'll still have a few weeks to get a manager in to assess the squad, decide who to sell, give away or keep. Then, scout around for new players, sign about 10-15 of them and get them to gel.
    All in all, a doddle.
