Sunderland v Swansea Competition - Sky Bet Championship Venue - Stadium of Light Date - 14 January 2023 Kick off - 3:00pm Following their 1-1 away draw against Bristol City in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a return to League action and a tricky looking trip to play fellow Play-Off contenders Sunderland. Last Sunday, Bristol City failed to win at Ashton Gate for the eighth successive game, with Antoine Semenyo's second-half header earning a replay at the Swansea.com Stadium on 17th January. The Swans were dominant in the first half but Semenyo's goal was deserved as the Robins were equally dominant after half-time. Semenyo headed home with 15 minutes remaining after Latibeaudiere failed to clear, and Steven Benda failing to make what should have been a comfortable save. The Swans had been gifted the lead on 15 minutes when Rob Atkinson's awful pass went straight to Liam Cullen, who presented Joel Piroe with a tap-in. The winners of the replay will host Chesterfield or West Bromwich Albion in the 4th Round. Last Saturday, Sunderland scored twice in stoppage time to reach the FA Cup fourth round at the expense of League One side Shrewsbury Town. Matthew Pennington had nodded in a right-wing corner 10 minutes before full-time to put Shrewsbury in front, but Ross Stewart, on as a second-half substitute, netted Sunderland's equaliser and Luke O'Nien swept in the Black Cats' winner from 18 yards. Midfielder Chris Rigg, 15, came on for Sunderland in the closing minutes and became the second youngest player ever to appear for their first team and helped Sunderland complete their sensational comeback in the driving rain in Shropshire. Including the first fixture in February 1937, the Swans have played the Wearsiders on 35 occasions, winning 11, drawing 11 and losing 13. The teams last met in Sunderland in February 2017 when the Swans ran out 2-0 winners in a PL match thanks to goals from Llorente and Naughton: Turning to Saturday, I can see nothing other than a comfortable home win 3-1. If the Swans do lose, that would make it 1 win in 12 matches (including the FA Cup match last Sunday). In the 11 Championship matches, that would be 8 points out of a possible 33. I hope I’m wrong
Very generous of you to refer to us as "Play-Off contenders" Taff It really does show how poor the general standard is. I also fear the comfy home win.
Well we are currently only 4 points below Boro who are 5th, and a win on Saturday would take us equal with Sunderland ….. but I must admit, I’m starting to look more at the gap to the relegation zone …
It doesn't matter how close we are to the play off positions when we can't earn many points... in a poor division at that
Keith Stroud will be the man in the middle when Swansea City travel to Sunderland on Saturday (3pm). It will be the second time the man from Hampshire has overseen a Swans game this season having previously blown the whistle at a 3-0 home win over Hull City in September. Ryan Manning, Joel Piroe and Luke Cundle were on the scoresheet and Stroud handed out three yellow cards with Nathan Wood the only Swansea man booked. The 53-year-old Stroud joined the National List of Referees in 2004 and took charge of a Swans match for the first time in March of the following year; a 2-2 draw against Northampton Town at Sixfields. He has been the referee for a further 25 matches including a League One play-off semi-final in 2006 and a Championship play-off semi-final in 2020 – both against Brentford. So far this season, Stroud has taken charge of 21 matches handing out 106 yellow cards and two reds. On Saturday, he will be assisted by Matthew Jones and Andrew Fox. Robert Madden will be the fourth official.
People, particularly the Martin aficionados, jumped on the bandwagon of trust the process after the Watford win. They had around 10 players unavailable ….
My prediction is totally based on no logic whatsoever, but the law of averages mean at some point this season we may win an away game 0-2. If I was a betting man I'd keep my money in my piggy bank.
good advice mate ill keep mine under lock and key as well , i was confident of a win last game and we wus Turked. we can but hope but Swansea are a good team
Sorry to say I can't see us getting anything out of this one so it's a 2-1 defeat for me. Hope I am wrong.
Safe journey to all who travel. Good travelling support in Plough today prior to flying to game. YJB's xx
