In hindsight, would many here prefer that we spent that extra 15m and got Suarez, instead of Ozil? Latter seems to find it difficult to impose himself on games we don't dominate, he needs other world class players around him to shine against heavy weight opposition (ie like he had at RM). Not the type to get us out of trouble. It is still early days I guess and may need a full season before any judgements can be made. I really hope he makes me sound like a fool this time tomorrow night by being the difference between us and Chelsea.
When we made the 40m+1 bid, Rodgers et al were making noises about £55m...that was when Suarez was really agitating for a move and going to the papers etc....plus back then no one knew how he was going to react to being banned for 6 games. Alas, that was something we didn't know either hence didn't want to take the risk. He would've been well worth the extra money.
Excellent strikers are numerous. You can always go out and get a great striker from somewhere if you're willing to spend the money. An Ozil is the kind of player that can make teams winners. We had the chance to Ozil and we took it. The world class striker is the next target.
Name one that we'd pay an appropriate fee for and wouldn't just get outbidded by other clubs who also need strikers and are richer than us...
I'm with you on this one, we should have got both or tried harder to get Suarez rather than the silly +£1 bid we made.
As I said, if you're willing to spend the money. If you want a world class striker, the wrong way to go about it is moaning about how you want the very best in the world but also want to pay an "appropriate fee".
I'm not sure we would have even gone for Ozil if we hadn't tried for Suarez. The one thing that came out of that failed bid was the realisation that we would have to pay top dollar for the best players. If we hadn't tried with Suarez, then I don't think we would have ever made a forty two million bid for anybody.
Not entirely correct, after Gazidis' ill advised public wallet brandishing at the beginning of the window, a big signing was always very likely. But agreed, after the Suarez saga and not spending anything until the last day it was spend big or mass mutiny....the fact that the Bale sale went through and Ozil was deemed surplus by Ancelotti was our saving grace.
So name one who's available and we could afford and who would come to us. Suarez - no chance Falcao - Chelsea would outbid us Lewandowski - Bayern is where he wants to go Who else?
The difference is Suarez would have won you that game tonight and Ozil was never likely too. Saying that having both in your team would be immense.
Both those Giroud chances are bread and butter for Suarez. Add to that he's likely to have made something out of nothing. You're only a striker short of big things imo.
True. But he's as one season wonder ish at the moment as Benteke was last year. Worth a shout though. Either that or get Wenger to seduce Lewandowski over the phone like he did with Ozil.
Lewandowski might be doable but he is set on Bayern but Dortmund would rather us than Bayern getting him. Costa might be a one season wonder, but if that's what it takes to win us the league he's, like you said, worth a shout because Giroud while decent, has his faults and can't carry us on his own to the title.
You clearly did not watch him last season, then. Was brilliant as well and and showed other parts to his game when he played alongside Falcao. Basically in these two years he has shown that he has everything in his locker. Can play upfront on his own or alongside another forward if needs be.
Costa's not moving in January, we can forget about him. Right, after a quick brainstorm, this is the best i could come up with: Robert Lewandowski (Dortmund) - May just be doable, he wants to play for Bayern, but we do have a couple of poles here to help him settle Michu (Swansea) - Temporary stopgap option until Costa's available in the summer, would be pretty cheap and is far better than the Potato Edin Dzeko (Citeh) - Would be difficult, but if we offered Citeh enough cash, they might say yes Kostas Mitroglou (Olympiakos) - Would do until the summer Jackson Martinez (Porto) - An expensive risk, not fully sold, if it works, it'll be epic. Seydou Doumbia (CSKA) - Very very quick, not the best finisher Mario Balotelli (AC) - Proven ability, poor temperament.
Half of those aren't feasible, some aren't good enough and some are huge risks. You say Costa won't move yet Mitro who just signed a new contract will?
