First signing of the summer is apparently the bizarrely-named 17-year-old Monty Gimpel who looks a good little prospect in defense: link.

Meanwhile Leicester have been linked with a £2m bid for Kasper Schmeichel. Accept it, I say! Use the money to offer Keiren Westwood a contract he can't refuse.

Mostly free transfers coming in according to the YEP. I am thinking of starting a not606 Kasper fan club to add balance to your hatred. Also, he has been called up to the Denmark squad as 3rd choice! Go on lad.

    :D

To be fair, it's probably the coaches who should bear the brunt of my hatred but Kasper's surname makes him such an easy target.

True, though if we could make £2m out of him and secure Keiren Westwood with that money, it seems like a no-brainer to let him go. Also, defence aside, his domination of the box seemed to disappear throughout the season, his kicking got much worse, his percentage of camera saves rocketed and his constant yelling at people whenever he himself cocked up made me think he's getting too big for his boots. He'll do next season but it makes more sense to replace him now than let him sit out another deteriorating season and leave when his contract runs out to go earn megabucks as a replacement keeper at Everton or somewhere.

Anyway at least this Gimpel lad sounds like a good one for the future if it's true we beat off interest from Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Brighton and Southampton. Won U16 player of the year among independent schools apparently, so he's obviously showing some good signs. Shame about the uninspiring one-year contract. He'll no doubt impress for our reserves while here and end up at Everton or Tottenham next season after we fail to give him a wage raise.

    Loiner's Transfer Roundup 27/05/11

    • Our new weird-named wonderkid Monty Gimpel has given the standard new signing's interview, sort of confirming that other clubs were interested:

And his former coach at Tooting & Micham has given the following assessment:

Good luck Monty, let's hope you're not as much of a prick as your golfing namesake who quit supporting Leeds for the Chelsea scum. :emoticon-0112-wonde

    • The official site has now posted two articles in two days about the departures of Bradley Johnson and Neil Kilkenny, both of them having refused LUFC's improved contract offers.

According to his agent, two Premiership clubs are interested in Johnson, the official site reports, with the Yorkshire Post speculating that these are Stoke City and West Brom, which will mean that "Hull City, who first registered their interest in Johnson last November when they proposed a swap involving Caleb Folan going to Elland Road, are likely to be left frustrated in their attempts to sign the former Northampton man on a free transfer." Unlucky, fish lovers. Or lucky, depending on your opinion of BJ. Amazingly, Wigan, Bolton and Sunderland are all being mentioned too. Bradley's agent's clearly been busy on the blower. :emoticon-0129-call:

In fairness, Johnson and Kilkenny seemed like two relatively likeable (though limited) players and they adequately performed the role they were assigned, but if promotion really is the aim next season, it's time to look for two bigger and better characters. This article from the Square Ball sums Johnson's performance at Elland Road up pretty accurately in my opinion. An average player who had flashes of brilliance counterbalanced by shocking errors. Even if we'd kept him, he was never going to be consistently good enough to get us promoted from this division and I find it highly unlikely that he will cut the errors out of his game at whichever Premiership club he blags his way into.

    • Oldham midfielder Dale Stephens is the latest player to be linked, again in the Post. At least it's not Chris Taylor any more. :emoticon-0113-sleep

    • The 18-year-old goalkeeper Alex Cairns has also signed a one-year contract with United after progressing from Academy level. Let's hope he doesn't end up the same way as Alan Martin. :emoticon-0147-emo:

    • You can also transfer copious amounts of your hard-earned cash to the club if you're planning on buying a new season ticket. High levels of masochism required.

    <ok>

You got any idea who you'd like to see replacing them? Within Mr Chairman's economical budget, that is.

Millwall's defence + Leeds' attack would make a great side. I still know which team I'd rather have though. And it doesn't contain that rat Neil Harris.

People seem to think he's a bit over the hill, probably the sort who demands £20k a week as well just because he played in the Premiership once.

We've been linked with Jack Cork, which would be a very good signing - a young battler like him in central midfield along with a more experienced playmaker would give us a huge leg-up for promotion. Chelsea have alreday had bids from Soton and Blackpool accepted though so we'll need to move fast and get Ken's wallet out of his clenched old fist if we want to sign him.
