I know zero about the players brought in, but it is a good sign at least they are signed on more than year contracts. Hopefully we can see some stability brought into the club.
That would be terrific. And if we make it back to the Championship, lets hope the current owner is willing to try and keep us there, unlike the one we had in 2019.
I hear we lost our first pre-season kickabout? 22 players used, 11 each half? I didn't know we had that many!
It seems that there probably won't be any new signings for the next couple of weeks. That takes us nearly up to the first game of the season. I think we've let about 9 players go so far, plus all the loan signings from last season. And one or two are going out on loan. On the incoming side we have four new permanent signings and one new loanee. It may be that we are planning to run with a smaller squad than last season - we used 34 players, 16 of those newcomers, 14 making 10 starts or fewer. Personally I'd like to see the number of players used this season as low as possible, but I'll be surprised if it's fewer than 30. These are the numbers of players we've used in the last decade (per season); 2012-13 ... 32 2013-14 ... 35 2014-15 ... 32 2015-16 ... 37 (relegated) 2016-17 ... 33 2017-18 ... 33 2018-19 ... 29 (promoted) 2019-20 ... 33 (relegated - season interrupted by COVID19) 2020-21 ... 33 2021-22 ... 34 No coincidence I think that our for best season in that decade we used the fewest players. And the next best seasons of 2012-13 and 2014-15 (both mid-table in the Championship) have the next lowest numbers of players used. We need around 8 more players in (in my opinion) and it looks like we won't get most of those until we are already playing the opening league games of the season. Ben Garner has his work cut out for him. It's going to be important to get off to a good start with what we already have. Last season by the time we had everyone we were going to get until January, Charlton had lost 5 of their opening 7 games.
Yeah, I've been quietly happy with the summer recruitment, but for me, a creative midfielder and a striker (a different type from Stockley) are the two positions we need filled before we kick off. Time to get this done methinks.
I can imagine some fans pulling their hair out and saying "no, we need seven or eight" but I'm no fan of big untidy squads with a load of fringe players & passengers in them. There's no reason at all why we should not be using 20 players (max) between now and January. We've had too much dross in the squad for nearly a decade now.
He may be more suited to L2. I wish him every success but for me, he isn't the striker we need to go up. Bet he scores a few against us in the future though.
