It’s so surprising to me that we haven’t had more interest from Premier League clubs for Greaves. A left footed, promising English centre back who has shown a willingness to step out like a lot of teams playing with 3 centre backs want now. I see Greaves going further than KLP.
£30k is also a lot for a Championship club and would be most clubs’ highest-paid player by some distance. Yo-yo teams tend to have a massive wage bill compared to the rest of the Championship but they can afford it with parachute players payments, but they are by no means the rule.
He just has so many assets that premier league teams look for. His ability to step out with the ball and be progressive is much harder to teach than the defensive side of the game. That with the left foot and English premium should see us with a fair bit of money after another good season if we could tie him down to a new deal.
Surely many clubs in the Championship have players on £20k+. Most of the top 10 will I'm sure about it. I'd rather we paid a Muriqi £40k or whatever instead of having alright championship players on £15k. My point is, doing it for the odd one is fine. I think, according to Football Finance Guy, Kieran Maguire, that the average weekly wage in the Championship is around £16k a week.
Makes Tans interview all the more confusing. Sounds to me like he's saying Greaves need to prove himself to us for another year before they reward him with a big contract https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0cjbj0w
I interpreted it as they’ve offered him something for the time being but will substantially reward him if he stays another year. Likewise Fleming
Why the wait though? He's proven himself at this level last year. Get him tied down to a long term contract on a wage he deserves now and stop any speculation.
I agree seems very daft for Greaves, Fleming makes a little more sense but Greavesy should be tied up as soon as. What’s his contract situation?
Greaves got another year left, but we probably have a year option like we do on most players. I agree makes sense for Fleming, he's had a good 6 months but is still unproven playing in a back 4 at this level. Improve his wages as he's probably on next to nothing for a championship footballer and agree to revisit down the line if he performs.
I didn't realise Mitro got 43 goals ffs. I can see him hitting 30 ish in an attacking side though. Toney, Pukki, Rhodes, McCormack, Murray, Murphy etc have all shown that's possible in the last decade
I think the back 4 thing is a big one as that’s obviously Shota’s vision. I’d like to see us get rid of Elder and get someone in to really challenge Brandon. I thought he was really good most of the time he played but mainly because of his linkup with Greaves and KLP going forward. Even with that in mind, my overarching memory is the game at Derby when Ebosele taught him a lesson.
Ebosele taught him a lesson day, but to be fair to him he kept going and created our goal. Just going back through our games and it appears we played a back 4 in the following games against Fulham, Sheff U and Barnsley and I can't recall him getting done too badly.
This is just my guess but, with players knowing that we're now splashing the cash on signings, they'll all want their piece of the pie, while we'll be conscious of not being held to ransom by every existing player that needs a new deal. So of course we're going to hold out and try not to set any precedent of overpaying for existing players. We've lost Honeyman though so it is tricky. It'll be interesting to see whether we can convince Greaves, Fleming and others to extend on favourable terms for us or if we'll have to give in and pay big money.
