I think he'd be better than Pandur, so yes.

It's another short term signing though. It's a little bit bizarre, but you have to question why it wasn't done weeks ago if we really wanted him.

Completely agree. I was chastised for complaining that we hadn't even made any cheap free signings before Greaves and Philogene went because we wanted to know what budget we were working with, but if we end up signing someone like Mannone anyway, surely that didn't matter?

It's all difficult to understand. We knew Greaves and/or Jaden was going so you'd assume we'd have been working on players we wanted to sign with the money. You'd be wanting to be well on the way with the signings so you could pull the trigger once they left.

At what point do we start asking where the money has gone, Zambrano is a loan, Mehlem was six figures, Costa is a loan and Mannone & Drameh are frees, albeit comp on Drameh.

I think the answer will be that the money has gone to offsetting the loss from last season and running costs for the club. The bid for Hughes and I suppose Millar are the only two that look like being for fees.

But that's not what Acun said he'd do. He said a few times that he'll spend as much as he can under FFP and reinvest the money from fees into the club.

    I just don't understand it.

If we lost around 20m last season we would need to basically breakeven this year so as not to be in jeopardy next season. It would mean a subdued season this year before launching again next year as a year of losses drops off. If this was clearly and openly communicated and we shifted our approach to cheap, free signings and loanees that were in the door early, I don't think anyone would be half as concerned as we are now. The lack of transparency and communication is the issue.

I've said in the past and got pelters for it, but for all the abuse and hate for the way the Allams ran the club, their policy of going for cheap signings on low wages meant our losses were always moderate, so if we had to see a similar season this year under Acun it wouldn't be the worst thing. Just get someone from the club to come out and say it.

But if that's the case why spend £1.5m on a pitch? Why bring Oscar back on massive wages? The lad's useless unless he's in the penalty box and why take a punt on a manager that plays kamikaze football who's never had any real success as a manager? Keep it safe, stable, and target players in L1/L2 to fill the squad out as they're cheap and there are plenty of decent players.

The money spent on the pitch is excluded from FFP calculations as it's investment in infrastructure.

Bringing Oscar back on a big wage may be cheaper than spending money on a signing, plus if the Brazilian club wasn't looking likely to sign him, better to cut that short and see if we can get him going and entice someone to take a punt on him in January.

Wonder if Ali Al-Hamadi is available for loan from Ipswich? Had completely forgotten about him but he'd be worth going after.

I know the pitch is excluded but I don't think this feels like it's about FFP, this feels like it's about not wanting to spend money any more.

All the talk has been about another couple of strikers coming in, Oscar probably won't be the main striker, so you've got a lad on £20/25k a week sitting on the bench.

In terms of FFP we have to be fine, we had the KLP sales which limited losses from 22/23, yes we'd have lost decent money last year, but we didn't go mad on transfer fees and then this year we've had the two big sales plus a few other sales. There's no reason we shouldn't be able to spend £15m on transfer fees, especially as it'll only get booked at roughly £5m when amortised.

Hirst has got injured so probably not. Looks a decent player though and a head scratcher why we didn't go after him in January when he was available for just over £1m + add-ons.

We lost about 20m in the KLP season when ignoring his sale, which seems a reasonably good barometer for the season just gone's losses where we would have spent similar (going by Acun's 'pushing to the limit' comments) without an offsetting sale (I think Tufan and Allsop were sold in that season though?).

I do agree though and have said previously that transfer fees shouldn't cause us too much issue due to how they amortise, and we've got a lot of wages off the books.

I'm simply trying to make sense of it, but as said, if the above is what's going on, then just come out and say it and go after a cheaper level of signings. Spending all this time trying to penny pinch to get Hughes in seems daft.

The problem we have now is that every player we are linked with has heavy interest from the Championship and we don't look an attractive proposition at the moment.

McAteer and Millar would be great, but half the league are after them so what can we do to convince them to come here, outside of offering Millar silly money? Hughes has got to be done in the next few days or we're going to get gazumped again, we've got to try harder and we can't keep focusing on one target at a time.

A 35 year old Mannone isn't going to inspire anybody, as decent as he is, because Pandur isn't a write off by any means and played well enough against Reading. We can't be waiting until Wednesday or Thursday to get players in, because TW needs more than 48 hours with the players. Otherwise they won't have a clue what they're doing.

I'll say it again, either Acun or Tan need to come out and explain what is going on. Radio silence just makes them look ridiculous when we're five days from the opening game, which I might add is live on Sky for the ****ing world to see.

The biggest thing we can promise young players is almost guaranteed game time and a track record with a number of youngsters (KLP, Greaves, Philogene, Delap, Morton) of giving players a platform to jump into PL football relatively quickly.

True, but is that enough to make them come? Because what changes minds is money and while the offer of game time is going to be significant, if other clubs are offering more what can we do?

I notice Lawrence Shankland is still at Hearts, why on Earth haven't we gone in for him at £3m?!

I sound like a broken record on this but there's no in-between this year. There's the top level of loanees, who we realistically don't have a chance of getting, like Rak-Sakyi and Stansfield or the others are raw and very young. All those you'd mentioned (apart from academy lads) had played in the Championship before and the Championship is a tough league so you need that.

The only one I've found is Moran but he was extremely up and down at Blackburn. There's quite a few really good ones that look about a year away from being top loans.
