It wasn't that long ago where Orient fielded the following players in our squad... Ray Wilkins Alvin Martin Peter Shilton Les Sealey (in fact it may have been one single season) Yet, despite this, Van der Sar and Neville have annouced retirement from football (whilst playing in the top flight). I understand that money plays an important role in this and because they don't need additional income they stop playing... but where is the passion? where is the love for the game? there was once a day when you could guarantee to see some top talent in league 1 and 2 or from the subs bench... and I for one feel this is a shame. Teddy Sheringham did it a few years ago, playing for Colchester before going out of the game... Ian wright went to Burnley or somewhere... but to the best of my knowledge this is it It'd be great to see players go out of the game still loving the thrill of playing... not just counting the number of zeros at the end of their bank balance!
could not agree more, I am told that we wanted Ray Parlour a couple of years back but he wanted a silly money and a share of the gate !
a share of the gate??? Maybe it was a demand from his ex wife??? funnilly enough.... he ended up at the grand opening of an estate agents in Gillingham near where I work! Nothing says success quite like cutting the ribbon at an estate agency opening!
Peter Shilton, that seemed weird to me at the time, England's No 1 in goal for US! I kept staring at him all the time.Ex 1st div players that stick in my mind are Peter Braybrook,Ralph Coates,Ian Bowyer,Stan Bowles(Brilliant)Alan Whittle,John Jackson, and do you remember Gerry Queen,he hit a screamer from the 6 yard box that had flames on it,it flew just past the right hand post at the Coronation Gardens End and I stuck my hands up to catch it,I say it had flames on it because my hands stung like hell for ages after. All,except Shilts, was when we were in the 2nd div though, not many top players drop down below that.I was working in Leyton High Rd when Stan Bowles played for us and I used to get in for free just before half time where this copper bent my arm up a bit to make it look like I was arrested and took me through that tiny little door on the East Stand.I still don't know what that little door is for,but for a time in the 70's it was my little door.I'm having that if we move!
That little door BasildonO,was the matchday door for a supporter, who sat near me in the east stand for years.I dont think he ever paid,he wore a blazer with the club crest on the breast pocket.Sadly he is no longer with us.One of the great characters of the east stand.
I agree, if i was a professional football I'd want to play as long as i possibly could. I can only imagine working in the media pays more than dropping a division or three.
Well Ive just joined up.it seems many of the 606 gang are here, so seems the right place to be Anyone know when the 606 is closing?
Sorry Comeon, had a look for you but cant find anything more helpful than this from Ben Gallop's blog on the main BBC website: Apparently a few people have emailed them to ask but haven't been given a definite date that I could see.
It's closing at the end of the current football season. That's from the Beeb! It's a shame because I prefer 606.Iv'e been searching around,ITV,Sky etc. but nothing yet. I won't miss their moderators though tossers! That's not Emo BTW!
