Seeing EastneyPFC's avatar brought back memories of my childhood.

What subbuteo teams did you have.

I had Pompey, of couse and Plymouth Argyle (novelty of a team in green). But not being too over-endowed in the pocket money department I used to buy kits that could be used for various sides.

I had the Liverpool change strip of white tops, black shorts and red socks. This could double up as Darlington. Also, if you coulkd ignore the red socks, you could use it as Derby County.

I had a black and white stripe kit, which could be Newcastle, Notts County or Grimsby.
Pompey could [again by ignoring the red socks] be Ipswich or Everton.
Blue and white stripes could be WBA, Huddersfield or Sheffield Wednesday

I had Pompey and Man U for my brother.

Also had the standard Red and Blue teams that came with it, but I was sad and if i wanted a new team I would just repaint the standard ones! Airfix and Subbuteo = my childhood!

I used to buy whatever they had. I was proud of my Hamilton Academicals set though.

Kinda sad I missed out on 'proper' Subbuteo. I had a crappy Michael Owen endorsed England version when they tried to bring it back :p

My brother had a better footy game with players equipped with spring-loaded legs. Can't remember what is was called, but you could actually kick the ball a long way. Subuteo was ok, but the players would lie flat after the slightest touch (usually my knee leaning on them) and them when you tried to get them up, they snapped of their discs.

Was that striker? You whacked them on the head, to make them kick the ball.

Was definitely Striker! The poormans Subbuteo in my opinion - if your player fell over in Subbuteo and the ball then hits him, its hand ball - all part of the tactics! You can only pick players up once its your turn!

My dad, for my 6th Birthday, bought me a Subbuteo set and a massive piece of ply board to attach the pitch too - so no knee crushing problems for me :)

The finest game I ever enjoyed as a lad - and yes Mike, Airfix - boyhood joy. My brother and I ended up with a fair few teams - definitley used one to cover others - AC Milan was Bournemouth and Leeds was Real - Liverpool doubled as Poland. We had Peru which was great and passed them off as Man City away. Always thought it went pear shaped when they changed from the solid looking players and bases to somewhat lightweight bases. Anyone ever play 4-4-2? Not a bad game either!! Probably aimed at the over 40's on here tbh. :)

My older brother had Striker. It was a very early version [before the goalkeepers could 'dive'] It was a red team with white shorts/red socks against a light blue team with white shorts/light blue socks (sort of Man Utd v Man City) I distinctly remember that the blue team's goalie had a green top and the red team's had a yellow top. One of the red players had a bit of plastic broken off his shorts above his kicking leg. Consequently if you hit his head too hard the ball would fly over the crossbar, causing you to spend 20 minutes sifting through the paper rack/pot plants/book case looking for it. He also had "Test Match"; again an early edition, with a big picture of Freddie Truman on the box. The ball was a small ballbearing, about the size you used to get in the steering column of a pushbike. The extra weight on the bottom of the bat gave it the appearance of a vacuum cleaner!

Devo, you mention most of the shirt styles, but you didn't seem to have a red & white "deckchair" version to represent our friends from down the road - what an omission !! <laugh>

Ahhhh - i played the Subbuteo one - no where near as good as the football side, but the cricket pitch was a lot bigger than the one you have shown in your photo!

Mike, I like the Star Wars reference in your signature. But I was wondering if your name is a Rolling Stones reference?

It is loosely based on the stones, but also from my favourite computer game of all time - Final Fantasy 7 - and the main character being Cloud - but with my name being Mike I can also give the Stones a bit of credit!

This looks like a great game, Wicked wickets, comes in at £500+ though. Very tactical, clever game, from what I've seen.
