I wrote an article a while back about how we are playing a false 9 system with Suarez as the F9. Rodgers today had this to say: "Suarez's goal was brilliant and he has been fantastic for us," said Rodgers. "He is a world class striker. "He plays the false nine role like Messi does at Barcelona." I think this is a great role for Suarez and is a great way of getting the very best out of him. But the WF's need to score more for this to reach its full potential. Are you guys fans of this system?
Love it. However, that would suggest we won't be getting a Huntelaar type of player, rather a Walcott / Sturridge type that can score from one of the wide spots.
Well it is good to be at least two possible systems. One thing great for Spain with this system is when Torres and Negredo come on as impact subs.
We keep getting told that Rodgers doesn't have a plan b, wouldn't signing Huntelaar be going against that?
Not his greatest fan by any means- but what a goal yesterday, just watched it there and feel compelled to write of my approval- he must be chuffed to have gained it!
I don't think so it will just mean Huntelaar doing the same job as the striker does for Barca and Suarez then having more freedom like Messi does. The whole point of this system is not to have a plan B as when it works we should control the game and get the goals, how far off from this working is the question we all want answered as it's frustrating at the moment.
Brendan is correct. He may and this may be tongue in cheek be dropping a hint to the owners that to get even more out of Luis Suarez is to buy a striker that has only one thing on his mind and that is putting the ball in the net. Said play doesn't have to be creative, said player can do nothing for large periods of games, said player doesn't have to drop deep. The creativity can come from the likes of Shelvey, Sterling and Suarez should they start. I'm a fan of the system to a point, the problem with it at the moment is that it will only get you so far, but it needs a player that has only one intention and that is to bang them in. Some of us have agreed that players like Klass Jan Huntelaar, Demba Ba and Gary Hooper would be ideal.
I flinch at the Name Messi as it'll be stick to beat us with me thinks but I understand the point being made. We bloody need something ....else.
He's made a direct comparison, so he's invited the piss taking tbf. I think he was trying to be clever (again) with his 'false No. 9' clap trap.
You could argue that Suarez is more than Messi because Barca can still win games and scores without him.
Been supporting Liverpool for 26 years mate, so saddened in the state of this team/manager/owners, but it seems most people on here think it's fine/transistion blah blah blah. We need wins, oh it's ok we played well, we were unlucky with this/that. The whole setup is laughable. Wish i was wrong, not to worry we'll have Borinin back in January, no wonder Torres left!!
Is that the Messi who plays for Barca? Is that the Barca who had Ibrahimovich? Is that the Ibrahimovich who's 2" taller than Andy Carroll? Is that the Andy Carroll BR shipped out because tall players "don't fit the model"?
Here we go again, How long did Ibra last at Barca? He was shipped out as quickly as he got brought in. We could use Andy, not saying we can't, but use a better comparison. Ibra flopped at Barca.
i have to say it was very laughable. sorry but while suarez is indeed a great player the most vital of all comments made by rodgers was: "We play him (Suarez) in that false nine role. He's not a traditional number nine who's up there, stood, static. "That's why when we get a number of players in who can work off his qualities, that's going to make us a real threat. I ask him to get on the move and get defenders out of their positions. "His cleverness and movement at the moment is world class. It's then important that we've got men running in off that. If we can add to the group, you can see the excitement in our team." I wish someone could explain why rodgers thinks playing suarez as a "false 9" without said players running in behind into the gaps makes any sense. I lost count yet again of the times i say suarez pull out of the middle towards the ball and leave a vacuous hole where upon our "wingers" would end up looking up and then pass back to the half way line. seeing gerrard place glorious passes tot he feet of guys in space only to see them forced back time after time is sickening. What i saw was a long punt from enrique ans suarez playing off the shoulder of thier last man to score. I saw them then rip newcastle apart when SHELVEY did actually get in the box as policy. Until we line up with all the playing staff required to make the strategy wrok there is zero point in playing this way.... we neve rlook like scoring! for a ll the possession we are still leaking incredibly stupid goals and not scoring half enough. suarez = great.... tactics = not right for waht we actually do have. the sad thing is that come january even if 3 players arrive and transform us into the best team inthe league it'll take a title winning run of form to get close to 4th... januray is still 2 months off effectively, we are close to 4th now but by then??? suarez pulling out of the middle and getting into a free role is USELESS 80% of the time cos nobody from sahin to gerrard to suso and even sterling is getting into the box! it takes genius form suarez to create something.... what i'm seeing is we need most of our team into the opposition half to get a body into the box and we are then always getting cuaght on the break.
^ I think you're spot on there. I watched your game yesterday & there were times when Liverpool players just stood & watched Suarez move into the box & didn't give him an option. This is nothing to do with personel & everything to do with coaching.
Yeah and Colo is our Martin Luther King. Only kidding Thought you pissed all over us yesterday and Pardew claiming he thought we should have won - wtf
In the same game I saw Suarez collect the ball deep & pointedly ignore the runners either side of him on a number of occasions. They wrongly stopped making the runs. Not the first time i've seen that. I've also witnessed in quite a number of matches that when Suarez does pass; its always that foot too wide or behind the intended player so they are forced to consider the pass back to him or back altogether. Now I've watched Suarez' touch & technical ability enough to know this is a deliberate ploy. As I said on the match thread yesterday its a development of trust thing. Suarez needs to be told to pass accurately & more often in the final third whether the team mate fecks it up or not. If only to stop him from becoming predictable to defend against. On the other hand the other players can't just give up after 3 efforts to support that the greedy little **** (however brilliant) ignores. It's not their job to give up but the managers to highlight that Suarez isn't doing all his job right. If they continuously leave him to it he can counter any criticism with the I'm the only threat you have argument! So yes it's a training ground thing. BR has appeared to have taken the decision to play "his style" even in absence of the correct players anyway. Whether this is because he doesn't want all these youngsters learning one thing then he has to change it a year later on I dont know: Is he being insulting in what he believes these you players can learn? Maybe but then I don't know them personally. Is it because he can't line his team up any other way? Possibly; but then he doesn't come across as thick & he spent a good lot of time "learning" his trade (if in theory only), it surely wouldn't have taken that long to learn one system if that's all he knows eh? So I think we're back to he has decided the players will play it his way, those that are comfortable in it by the end of the year will stay. Those that aren't won't. And I still laugh at us all swinging from feeling we never had a realistic chance at 4th to getting angry when we sniff it and veer away again. I'm sticking with 6th at best that I believed at start of the season. That way I'm not getting angry with experimentation of players or a dogged determination to adopt a system and letting the current players sink or swim under. I'll still make criticisms but I'm not going to despair like some like to wallow in (not talking about you MITO). Of course it also doesn't mean that I would find 6th acceptable next year.
