I made a comment last night about our style of play, and after looking at some highlights and pieces of play, I think I've got it right.

I think Kenny is trying to encourage a total football style of play mixed with the tiki-taka of Barcelona (which they stole from us). This is why I think Maxi has excelled in particular and we find the likes of Skrtel, Flanagan and Johnson further up the pitch. It's a clever tactic and I think with the right workhorse players it works a treat, and we have Spearing and Kuyt who will both cover every blade of grass... twice.

Anyway, expect an attacking Left back signing if what I say is true. This effectively rules Clichy out, but puts Coentrão right in the mix.

If you think Maxi is used to be played on the wing, away from the attacking play, trying to cross the ball in. With the new tactic Dalglish has implemented we see him moving from the wing into the middle, letting the likes of Flanagan and Johnson let in the crosses.

Good point. I love the versatility of the players i.e swapping positions, finding the space etc. It's intelligent football and this is why I'm against the idea of having an out and out winger because I believe they are restricted i.e. run in a straight line up and down the wing and cross.

What we need is another Suarez type player who can play on the wing and then drift inwards and really mix it up.

Didn't Barcelona copy tika-taka from Ajax rather than you? Anyway I see what you mean about being everywhere, Kuyt's goal against Man City was a perfect example of this as every time they cleared it it went to a liverpool player.

I was joking about them stealing it from us, although it was a common part of play from all the top teams not that long ago.

You can have the greatest of intentions of playing such football, but when you have not got the players it amounts to little in silverwear, you should know that. Barca have the staff to play as they do, so did Ajax. Barca imo play as they do as they have the players to come up with the goods. What amounts to more than skill at Barca is movement, this is what Liverpool had in abundance last night.
Look at the United Chelsea game, Lampard brings the ball forward, and Drogba and Torres were standing practicaly stationary with a triangle of United players around them, static forwards are a dream for teams set up in this way. Liverpool failed to win so many times because of this same thing, lack of movement. Hopefully things hae changed.

My bad for being a mong and not getting the joke. Anyway I agree with BBF that positioning and constant running are definitely overlooked when you talk about how to make free-flowing football. Its not just about good 1st touch, short passing, being quick etc.

Pass and move, the liverpool groove. One of the biggest reasons I took to Liverpool back in the day!

    BBF.
    That was under Hodgson.
The 4-4-2 under Hodgson was exactly that,4 defenders,4 midfielders and two players in and around the box.
    This has changed.
You must have seen it against City,it was like pin-ball,if one player was cut off, another followed up,if that player got blocked off, another closed it down to retain possession and take a shot on goal, and if that was blocked off,it landed at the feet of another player in a red shirt, and eventually they got their reward. We're currently playing like the ''Old Liverpool'',hitting teams from all around the pitch. What makes it possible is players not staying where they started. It suits players like Maxi who starts wide left and isn't or never was a winger. When Suarez comes wide,he exploits the space that Suarez creates. He did it at Athletico Madrid because ''Kun'' Aguero is a similar player to Suarez.
