has anyone noticed that lately, all the goals we have conceded have been very similar. an opponent picks up the ball in midfield, drives forward, defence backs off, no midfielder tracks him, shot at goal from about 20 yards, goal. what is happening in training at Colney?
Apparently we've conceded more goals from outside the area than any other team. Teams are not afraid to have a pop from 20-25 yards out when they play us, they clearly feel no need to run it into the box or cross it in. The irony is we're too afraid to shoot from anywhere at all.
Watching the second goal on MOTD again I feel Bunn just flopped to the deck rather than actually dive at the ball, it was a good effort by The striker but he shouldn't have scored from the angle he was at going away from goal !
I have played a lot of football in my life. It may not have been to the highest standard but these two points come to mind: 1. When I see a short keeper lining up for the opposition I think to myself "I'll have a pop from anywhere". 2. If I have a short keeper in my side and to give him confidence in training, we go soft on him. This also has a detrimental effect at the other end of the pitch because we're not as sharp as we should be. Ham psychology I know, but why have we conceded more from outside the box than any other team? See point 1 IMO
A combination of bad luck that they that many shots from distance have gone in and giving opponents too much space to run at us. I know most people will just assume it is the latter because everybody is convinced we are going down and just love grumbling, but even when they do have space, players do not score from distance very often. In fact if I remember correctly, both goals I have seen us concede this season at Carrow Road were from outside the box; Shaun Maloney and Gareth McCleary and they were both pretty similar to the others we have let in (e.g Bale and Abonglahor).
Bunn has been good but unfortunately this is where we really suffer. He is simply too short. Ruddy would comfortably save the shots from range. I think Ruddy may have even done better with the second goal, though it was a tidy finish. The fact is though, we are not conceding many, so the problem is not our defence, as we well know.
Totally agree with this. With Ruddy in goal yesterday we comevawayvwith at least a point in my opinion.
Bunn being good is debatable. my main gripe about him is his distribution. he can only pump it downfield as far as possible, without any control in direction. i cannot remember ever seeing him throw the ball out to a defender to start. at least if we did this we would retain possession. Ruddy MUST start for our last two games. if he doesn't we can only conclude that he is on his way out of the club.
