In the present transfer market it seems to me that there are three or four types of player available:

    1. Underpaid foreign stars who simply want better contracts and wish to play in EPL. These guys are probably transient as they will come and go if better chances arrive.
    2. English stars of the future who attract crazy sums .
    3. Good players deemed surplus to requirements.

If we put Check, Ben, Cabaye in No1. camp , we must not forget Bassong or Modric as examples of what happens if they really shine.
Similarly, Carroll, Henderson and Whickham transfers are mad.

Then we get to the interesting bunch as Newcastle have decided to spread the joy of the AC cash to benefit the club/squad/facilities,Ashley ( not in that order). Newcastle have shown they are not a club to match like for like ( given/harper Carrol/Ba etc etc).

Me, I'd get Sturridge or Defoe in a flash on loan. Why buy? It will be nigh on impossible to increase their present values and wages are wages anywhere...
Newcastle get the benefit of a tremendous proven player without paying a transfer fee.

Would the fans be happier buying in decent players like Sunderland have, who simply have been deemed surplus by a top 4 club, but whose value will certainly not rise?

I think if we look at loan deals we should have clauses similar to Ben Arfa deal. If he plays 25 games we have first option to buy.

Agree any loan should have a pourchase clause

If we got Sturridge on loan ome of two things would happen: he'll have anotyher fantastic season and cement his position as a proven Prem striker or, he won't. If the first happens then there'll be no chance of his ever playing for us again unless we have a clause givign us priority.
