I know this is digging up the past but as I was reading various posts on the likes of Robertson and Brady, and our other left sided players, I wondered whether they could learn anything from watching videos of our Stu? yes he played at a very different level but it seems to me that it was his anticipation that set him apart. Not to mention his great heading ability for a left winger, and his willingness to bang in a shot when nothing else was on, or pick off a wicked shot on the half or full volley. Just wondering - any thoughts?
Stu was brilliant for us, but he was of his time, we've come a long way since then. Though if he could teach anyone else how to hang in the air like he often did, it would be rather handy.
Of course it does, but watching TV can make someone a better footballer, otherwise they wouldn't do it.
It's a decent theory if you ignore how poor Elliott was at Championship level for us, never mind Premier League. He was brilliant in the lower divisions but that was his level.
His 'Sports induced asthma' became an issue that year, I believe that was the issue not him not being able to cut it in the step up to the championship, his level was higher the League 1
No one can hang in the air,it's called the law of gravity. Well not without divine assistance anyway. Oh wait....
Sttuartt's skill was being able to strike the ball early. There were times he'd run with the ball and didn't break stride to kick it, which caught keepers off balance and un prepared.
I went to one of his God nights once and someone in the audience actually asked him if he thought he had angel wings. On a different topic, he also confirmed that he did get ragged in the changing room for being a Jesus jumper, with Ian Ashbee apparently fond of saying "here comes Holy Joe!" when Stuart arrived at the ground. He took it all in good (Holy?) spirit.
He moved back to start playing again, for Glentoran, but it didn't work out and he was released after only playing seven games.
