giggs and bellamy both born in cardiff, ramsey brought up through our youth system, and bale (also cardiff born) would have been in the squad but for a recent injury to him...

hopefully all of them will start, undoubtably 3 of the best players in the squad so i'm looking forwards to seeing how they do, who knows i may even pick up a few tickets if they';re going cheap :)

    full squad:

J Allen (Swansea), C Bellamy (Liverpool), R Bertrand (Chelsea), J Butland (Birmingham), S Caulker (Tottenham), T Cleverley (Manchester United), J Cork (Southampton), C Dawson (West Brom), R Giggs (Manchester United), A Ramsey (Arsenal), M Richards (Manchester City), D Rose (Tottenham), S Sinclair (Swansea), M Sordell (Bolton), J Steele (Middlesbrough), D Sturridge (Chelsea), N Taylor (Swansea), J Tomkins (West Ham)

The amount of welsh players could be due to the winner of the group playing the QF in Cardiff :emoticon-0138-think

Not a single welsh women in the female squad and only two Scottish (bit off topic I know ) and also none from northern Ireland , got to wonder how that represents GB

Sorry when someone pulls on a GB shirt and they are welsh won't care what part of the country they are from they are welsh and a rep for my country of birth , same as when any player pulled on a wales shirt they would cheer them on no matter where they were from , if you want to divide a already small nation into diffrent regions of them and us then fine , but I want no part of it

As i have told the swans fans, lets hope you wont have to travel to wembley to watch the token welshman playing for a permanent british isles team, because if it goes tits up thats what will happen,no welsh player has the right to put at risk our national team, its the birthright of all welsh footballers to represent Wales, hopefully it will still be around for our future welsh international players to realise their ambitions.

Those playing for this team are playing for themselves not Wales and certainly not you. Wales does not want anything to do with this team

So why does it work for other sporting events? Is football any different?
You have the Barbarians touring, the British lions, a relay team will have a mixture of nationalities born in the United Kingdom.
UEFA will not insist on a single GB team, they will lose revenue streams!
The Olympic games is not about money per se but UEFA is, as is FIFA and any other professional organisation. The GB team has been put together in an attempt to draw bigger crowds to help promote and pay for the Olympics. It won't pay for the Olympics, it's a big drain on public funds but there will be some return in tourism. So bottom line it's about money not national identity.

Yeah good one! Let's ban Bellamy, Ramsey, Allen and Taylor and watch us slump beyond 117th in the world and be in an even worse position than the dark days of Toshak and Gould! You ****ing cretins! It's a one off and probably the only time they will play on a big international stage. Good luck to them and Team GB from a fan who has not missed a Welsh international for 15 years and consider myself a proud Welshman even though I support the Wurzles!

Not going to get into the rights and wrongs of a GB team as I'm sure other threads have already done that , what I find distasteful is certain posters attempts to turn this into a Cardiff v Swansea thread just to score points , I do cheer for any welsh Swansea player that pulls on a Wales shirt and always have we have a small country that needs to stick together not be derailed by local rivalry and narrow mindedness

Ashton it may be a one off but you are obviously not aware of the possible implications of playing in this team. And less of the ****ing cretin references,oh forgive me your a wurzel, you live in newport Wales and you support an english team it does say it all , whose your second team Man Utd.

I suppose we have to be careful about double standards in all of this. From my point of view, I think the Olympics are a stand alone series of games and I can't see any need for footballing politics. If you think about it, our other Welsh Olympians have always been able to represent Wales in other competions without reprisal. Like it or not there is no reason for football to be any different. That said, I would like to see a change of attitude with some Welsh players and make them remember that representing a proud nation is as important as playing on the big stage.

As far as the representation from Cardiff is concerned, it's good to see people born in the city doing so well, but as a club we can hardly take any credit for most of them - and I'm not saying that anyone on here has suggested that we do.
