Alan Pardew is pushing hard for Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear to make a breakthrough in the transfer market.
Pardew watched his side round off their pre-season tour of Portugal with a 1-1 draw against Pacos de Ferreira last night.
And the emphasis today is on Kinnear to deliver his first signing as transfer chief with the Magpies.
The club remain in talks for Loic Remy of Queens Park Rangers and Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis. Pardew said: “I’m pushing Joe to get a transfer in.
“I think we need a boost now.
“We are in a situation where we want to progress now.
“The team are in a good place.”
Kinnear’s lack of progress on the transfer front has left United desperate for strikers.
Shola Ameobi’s future had been up for debate but the player notched his second goal in as many games last night in Porto.
Pardew suggested the striker may not move at all.
He said: “Shola is a player that is under contract here.
“He’s not made any noises to me that he wants to leave.
“Certainly with my striker situation at the moment, I need as many as I can get.”
Meanwhile, Pardew has broken his silence to clear up any confusion surrounding United’s involvement with Mick Harford.
Harford had suggested he had turned down a role of assistant director of football to Joe Kinnear.
His discussions with the Magpies understandably left United fans concerned whether Harford, who was Kinnear’s head coach during his Luton Town days, would have any involvement on the coaching team.
The ex-England striker – who has a 16.6% win record as a manager at Rotherham and just 27% as Luton boss in the lower leagues – had also left the door open for a possible move to Newcastle.
United fans had reacted angrily to the arrival of Harford in any role, and the one-time Toon striker was on the end of a string of Twitter messages making that clear in no uncertain terms.
But Pardew told the Chronicle last night: “He was coming in as a scout as part of the scouting team.
“That’s all he was coming in for.
“I don’t know where any other titles have come from that people came up with. That’s all he was offered.”

Pardew would be wise to retain Shola until the club buy him a couple of new strikers. He's ****e but he is all we have at present. So we are looking for an additional scout. Not sure Harford is the right man but it appears to be a big meal made out of nothing afterall. Funny I never thought the media were like that.....................

Love Shola but think it's time he moved on, but not before we get hopefully a striker in.

This is the problem Pards has. He can't afford to release him at the moment even though as you say, his time is up really. Any soundbyte regarding Shola at present is going to be nothing but positive. He is not going to push him out or say "I think Shola will be moving on" when he is in such a delicate situation striker wise.

Shola needs to **** off. No more bullshit anymore Newcastle, go out and buy the required players. We can't keep this aged **** retainer any longer. Year in, year out with have had to watch as he stumbles around the pitch embarrassing himself. I'm sick of these ****ing excuses.

Pardew has no clue what the hell is going on. Its going to be Bent lads and thats it. Cisse may leave and with Campbell apparently going to go out on loan it will mean Bent and Shola and that means a **** season.
