    Hi all

My Dad had a severe stroke last Tuesday and is currently in hospital unable to speak, eat, or use the right side of his body. As you can imagine it has been an extremely distressing week for all my family, especially as this was one of those moments when you are going about living life in the same way with the same routines when out of the blue your whole world changes.

Having never been in this situation before and having no idea what the next day, week, month, year will bring, I was wondering if anyone else had ever been here that could offer me some advice etc. If so please feel free to PM me as I would be very glad to hear from you.

    Thanks

    Mrs M x

Sorry to hear your bad news, Mrs Mapgie.

I think the first thing to do is make sure your dad is getting the best treatment in hospital. My experience of hospitals is that they can often be pretty poor when it comes to communication....demand that you are being kept informed of how your dad is being treat, what progress he is making and the options for the future.

And of course, contact an organisation such as the Stroke Association for good, sound advice.

sorry to hear this Mrs M
as Dorty has said, demand that you are kept informed at all times, by the hospital staff, speak to the head consultant on the ward
and if you don't understand any of the technical terms, ask to be told in layperson speech, find out what course of action are the hospital proposing to do
it will be a very tough time for you at the moment
I hope you and your family can all rally round and help in the support that your dad will need,
and help each other to come to terms with this

thinking of you at this stressful time

Sorry to hear that, I wish I could say something more helpful but it isn't something I've had experience of.

Hope things improve for you and all concerned.

Thank you for all your thoughts and wishes, they are much appreciated.

Dorty Mag - Stroke Association contacted today, thank you :emoticon-0100-smile

I cannot fault the staff at the hospital my Dad is at, honestly I shall never again criticise the NHS. The consultant showed us the scan and explained in simple terms what had happened, how it had happened and what we needed to do to help Dad. All the staff have taken the time to answer our questions, right from the dietician through to those taking the observations to the consultant. On Tuesday they have invited Mum to sit in on the meeting where all the various professionals - physiotherapist, speech and language therapist etc - discuss Dad's condition and the treatment they propose for him. They have been amazing and it is comforting to know that when we are not with Dad he is being looked after by such wonderful people.

    Thanks again :emoticon-0100-smile

Sorry to hear your news. We really are very lucky to have the NHS at times like these though, for all of its faults. Hope his recuperation goes well Mrs M.

Sorry to hear that, hope he can make the best possible recovery for you. As for advice, I would just say stay strong and be there for your family, particularly your father.

Hi Mrs M, so sorry to read your news. I hope your Dad makes a speedy recovery.
I don't have any firsthand knowledge of Strokes or their medical management and it sounds as though the staff in the hospital are doing a great job.
Similar to the advice of others, information and communication is key. We do tend sometimes to see Consultants and the like as unquestionable, but from personal past experience l would politely suggest asking to have everything explained in language you understand and at your pace. Don't just accept that this or that is best for your Dad simply because someone says it is. Question and always be absolutely satisfied before anything happens. Hope all works out well for you and your family, best wishes.
