Ok so it’s seems strike action is happening in most sectors. I take the ambulance strikes as an example. They want 19% extra plus better pay and conditions. The 19% actually becomes 25% including on costs. So will cost the government who is already haemorrhaging money an additional 25% that they can’t afford. Now I think they deserve a payrise of this magnitude but I put my finance head on. How do they fund this. Is easy to be ignorant and say they deserve it without a solution. And to me the only solution to fund it is to raise national insurance by 3-5%. Would you be prepared to pay the extra?
And to put it into context a lot of people may say reduce the political wages and top tier salaries in the NHS. Well even if we axed all of them together it wouldn’t cover anywhere near the cost.
Why not just reduce tax contribution for all workers in front line jobs, increase pay, increase NI as you say but by around 1-2% then tax those on £200k+ an extra 5%.
I would scrap tuition costs for medical profession students and scrap council tax and NI for all front line workers. Also block any students leaving Uni from becoming locums for a set period of time.
Why do they deserve a 19% increase? That amount is way above inflation. I don't have an issue with better work conditions but that's easy to say but hard to do. But why do they deserve a 19% pay rise. If they deserve a 19% pay increase then so do so many others who work equally hard. If then everyone gets a 19% pay increase then everything else goes up by say 19% and they are no better off. Same goes for the nurses. A fair increase, yes. a 19% increase, no. What's fair? For me less than inflation as otherwise that will simply escalate and everyone will be worse off.
Their argument is that their pay hasn’t gone up in line with inflation over the last couple of years. Do I agree with it being 19% nope. But it should be around 10% I think.
Yep. Not many people will tell you that they don't work hard regardless as to whether they do or they don't. My recent experiences with nurses in two hospitals tells me not all nurses work hard. A lot of people's wages have not gone up in line with inflation in the last few years. It may seem harsh but it's true but the nurses did get paid during covid. A lot of self employed people didn't.
Unfortunately not everyone votes so I hope the underpaid bring this government and this country to its knees quite frankly
Here's an idea....... Why don't we all accept that the UK (like most countries) is in the **** big time and we all need to ride this out together? Personally, I work in the private sector and would love pay increases like some of currently on the table in the public sector. I think over the last 5 years I've had a compound increases of just over 3% in total and through Covid etc... I'm grateful to have come out the other end with a job still. 19% is obscene, and if mapped across everyone would simply fuel inflation and everything goes up again and rinse and repeat. Make no mistakes... these strikes are union driven and therein agenda driven as they want their puppet Starmer in power next. That will happen due to the clowns in whitehall who are totally unelectable again but this is the Unions playing politics.. nothing more nothing less. Ask yourselves why when asked about the strikes, Starmer avoids answering the question as his entire front bench is stood their doing their Citizen Smith impressions on the picket line.... Don't believe the scum media either. There's a lot of folk not striking who are still members of the unions. My mate and his lass are both paramedics and they see what is afoot and want no part of it. On Monday our postie, who is a lovely fella despite being scouse, for no reason volunteered that the only reason they are wrecking xmas for many small businesses is due to working conditions as they have been asked to become more efficient like the the companies who deliver a lot of Amazon parcels and increase parcel throughput and drop rates. How dare the horrid Royal Mail want to remain competitive when they are leaking money left right and centre and losing market share. To the postie I simply said 'oh really?... why don't your unions just get the pay increase demand taken off the table then and then I'm sure a resolution will be swifter'..... to which he shrugged...... his union fed unprompted script had run out. If someone is that unhappy in a job... they can use their own free will and leave the industry or job role surely..... That's what I'd do personally.
Unworkable. How do you assess the criteria? What about the tidal wave of whattabouttery? Who pays more? Oh yeah the middle class again. Can't be the rich or they will just take their earnings offshore again. If someone doesn't like the pay they can always retrain and move industry. A mate of mine was a teacher... hated the pay (Which he new the level of before becoming a teacher) and now he's retained and is in Cyber security where there's more security, money and job prospects. He says the only thing he misses is all the time off.
