So yet again we manufacture no end of chances but struggle to score... It's clear we need an out and out goal scorer, but they are hard to come by and v overpriced in January... Given that Suarez was originally bought to partner Torres, and in my humble opinion would have complimented his style to create an awesome strike force... And given Torres's embarrassing bench warming and clear unhappiness and rapidly decreasing value at Chavski... Although a v unlikely scenario I know, but would you take Torres back on a loan in January? As much as his behaviour around / since his move has pained me as a Liverpool fan, I still remember how great he once was, and I feel embarrassed for him now; I think he now realises what a mistake he made and might be more humble and grateful if we had him back and forgave him. Plus imagine the goals...
Surely our club is worth more than that? Torres wanted to leave for what he called a big club and in doing so showed huge disrespect to Liverpool. He has a huge problem with confidence overall and with his fitness (he no longer trusts his body to run flat out) I'm not so sure us taking him back will return him to his previous form. We've already proven with Suarez that there are other great players out there and finding the next one is more important than giving someone who turned his back on us a second chance.
All good points, and I'm not defending Torres as his behaviour has been awful. I think I'm just sad at what could have been had he and Chavski not been such twats...
Let's not talk about Torres coming back to Liverpool, a scenario we've all thought about because of the situation he's in at Chelsea but this will NOT happen.
I don't think we do need to go out and risk 20mil on a forward. What we need is someone who stays around the box and can stick the ball in the back of the net. If you spend 20mil on someone you expect them to link up play etc but spend say £5mil - £10mil on someone that will just hang around the box and let Suarez do all the build up play and create the chances. Defoe? Not getting much game time - probably would want first team football with the Euro's coming up.
Definately not! For me a striker needs much more to his game than simply hanging around waiting for others to create for him. What would happen when Suarez is injured etc... or in tight games against top sides who would stick two or three players on Suarez and limit his ability to create for the guy waiting patiently in the area? The days of top sides having a poacher type player seem to be coming to an end; there has to be more to a players game than that. This is exactly why Defoe is not getting so much game time, also read the other day that Bent was the player with least touches in the premier another so called poacher/goalscorer. The problem with this type of player is they break up the fluidity of the attack and lose posseion easily because at times you have to pass to them when there are no other options, for me better to go for a quality player that can also unlock defences and has more to his all-round game.
You mean a fit Torres? There's not many in his mold around; and I think we're looking at £30-40m for the type of talent that we need for that job at the moment. Even Sturridge would command £30m atleast at the moment; young british talent and playing for a top team - must be more expensive than Carroll surely? Personally I'd like Cavani; especially with his ties with Suarez in the Uruguay National team - they can be a top partnership and we already know Cavani is a brilliant player on his own. A quality pairing in my opinion.
Exactly! This is the type of player we should be looking at. its not easy as we already know because of the champs league but it should not stop us trying as much as possible the Uruguay connectionmay help a little. There is no question we need at least one more worl class player be it Goetze, Cavani, Hazard etc..... of course I am aware that this is unlikely at the moment, we need to reach the next level for us to truly compete with the others in attracting players.
Just to add to my last post what I am trying to say is I think adding either a world class striker or world class midfielder would have the same effect. A midfielder would allow Suarez to play more as a main striker, whilst obviously another striker would create space for Suarez too, either way is fine by me!
I apologize in advance for the novella. Feel free to ignore it or read parts of it, i talk too much anyway. I feel as if Torres could be in a wheelchair while pissing on a LFC jersey and people would still be asking if we would take him back. First off, he can't score. What tells you he would play any different than now if he came back? He scored most of his goals with Gerrard, Alonso, Kuyt, Masch or even Meireles in the team, and now he's expected to score tons on his return? He'd be playing with Downing, Adam, Henderson, and Maxi. He'd need another bedding in period. Do you remember what Carragher said when he left? "Good riddance, he was moody and dividing the dressing room". Agger and Carra dislike him, and Carroll would certainly feel alienated. The dressing room shouldn't be divided because of one former player. Hoping he would be a 25+ goal striker because of Suarez is the same thing Chelsea fans thought with him and Drogba. It's not a guarantee. Second off, his heart wasn't with the club, showed that he wouldn't fight for the badge on the pitch, and jumped ship after a year of subpar performances. He then proceeded to fail to shut his mouth about the club, even after we had long before moved on. No Torres, please and thank you. It was nice when it lasted and I thank him a lot for the memories but he isn't a player that wanted to wear the shirt. As for a striker, Jovetic, Markovic or Cavani. I'm a broken record when it comes to Jovetic but knowing his style of play since he was 16/17 the English game would suit him more than the selfish no pass play of Italian football. Cavani is a class player and would e a great compliment to Suarez. He dominated City and is very talented. I don't think it would be easy to lure him. As for Lazar Markovic, I admit I'm trying to push interest in my team a bit, being a diehard Partizan Belgrade fan. He is definitely one for the future, but unlike the Pacheco's of the world he has shown his skill in a first team. He's speedy, good on the ball, great at passing players, plays the way Krasic did in his first year at Juventus. Look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kF-ktlXDlo he's the player at 0:51 who assists. Still, I'd love to see Carroll getting more opportunities against smaller clubs, the pass and move style might work with him as we just get too many draws like this.
Forget Torres. He had his day with us and he was awesome - now he is crap and will be back in Spain in 2 seasons. I honestly couldn't think of a single circumstance that would **** everything up at LFC more than signing Torres. Cavani and Suarez is simply mouthwatering but don't think we would be able to get him. I would support giving someone like Morgan a chance - even it doesn't work out - surely better than signing someone like Defoe. Think how enthusiastic he would be if we actually gave him a start up top with Suarez, all he would have to do is bag a tap in IMAGINE the confidence he would get from that, the kop going wild would surely kick start his career! Probably just dreaming but why not!
I would not be tempted to play any youngsters at the moment - we need stability and we need quality. Even the likes of Raheem Sterling need time to mature and go out on loan and ply their trade. I have watched Morgan play and although he has a knack of scoring goals, he has no technical ability or any pace whatsoever. We need a striker in January and I believe that there is no point getting someone on loan or an old player with no future. We might as well splash the cash and get real quality in and hope we bag another Suarez.
I see what your saying but what does it say to Carroll if we go and spend another 30m on a striker? This is why I don't think we will. When we have young talents does it always have to be the loan option every time?
Okay - time for my twopennies... I'm not really too keen on spending in the January Transfer window - everything is overpriced and it tends to smack of panic buying. I don't want a stopgap player bought in on an inflated wage. A loan deal might be the best answer. I have a player in mind for this and I'm sure most reds would like this one. He's French and the wrong side of 30, granted, but it appears from today's news stories that he is available in January and I think we could be doing him a favour as well. Now I know loads of you are groaning and moaning about putting money in the Chavski hands, but I promise you, nothing could be farther from my mind. I'm not looking at Le Sulk. He can go to work in China and I hope we never hear from the whiny lad or his agent brother again... No, no. Ladies and Gentlemen and The Hammerhead - my suggestion is that we take Thierry Henry on a two month loan from the New York Red Bulls. Seems like Moyes is already looking that way. According to Theo Walcott, Thierry is still in good condition. (Walcott isn't a scout, but he must have a decent idea of player condition and pace) This has some very attractive features - I'm sure Henry would love to gobble up all the chances we've been creating; I'm sure he'd love to play with Suarez (what striker wouldn't want to play up front with Suarez?); and as an added bonus, it'd nark off the bitters
Good point but the problem is everyone sees AC as the finished article. He's still a youngster and he should be treated as such i.e. not rushed into the first team, use him sparingly just as we did with Hendo. And to be honest, I don't care if we upset Carroll if we did go and buy another striker - he's not scoring and doesn't look likely to score either. Fair enough, if I saw more performances like the one against Chelsea in the Carling Cup where he won a lot of headers, held up the ball and passed well then I would be inclined to give him more opportunities. But he has been so poor, it's unreal and I'm talking about the basics such as ball control. Not only this, he does not fit the teams style of play. He is a more than useful impact sub to use in the last 15 mins. The youngsters in the striker dept at LFC don't look that promising to be honest. I have my doubts about Morgan despite his goal scoring record and Ecclestone may be half decent. At a crucial time, we shouldn't be taking risks with youngsters and we need good quality players. I remember a certain David Ngog being used and everyone blasted him. Using kids can be good but if it doesn't go their way, their confidence could be shattered by narrow minded fans.
Not neccassarily; I think it all depends on both who is buying and which club you are buying from; if you are buying from a club still in the champs league then fair enough but there is quality outside of those teams too. Of course some clubs do panic and overpay but it doesn't mean it is not possible, for me we are in a decent position with regards to this because in some ways we are exactly where we expect to be in the league and the pressure is probably on the others rather than us. I would love to see Thierry Henry at Anfield but I am not sure he would join us to be honest, I seem to recall him saying he would never play for one of Arsenal's rivals and he seems to have more integrity than the likes of Torres (except whilst playing for France, of course).
You may be right about Henry, but he would be a great loan signing for us. Ditto Samuel Eto'o, who might also be available as winter loan... but regards purchasing in January, I think we'll find that the Liverpool name will ramp up the price - most clubs will assume that we'll have deeper pockets than most, and if we're buying mid-season, that we're fairly desperate to get someone in, which further elevates the price. I'd love to be proved wrong on this last score... Also on a P.S. note I noticed an intriguing fact dropped by Garth Crooks in his 'Team of the Week' feature, as follows: GRANT HOLT Forward Norwich City For a player who has spent most of his football career in the lower leagues, he looks every bit the Premier League striker every time he takes to the field. Whenever the ball entered the Newcastle penalty area, Holt was causing them problems. Admittedly there was no Fabricio Coloccini or Steven Taylor to oppose him, but he still took advantage ruthlessly. Did you know? Holt has had the joint-most headed shots on target in the Premier League this season (eight, level with Andy Carroll). So perhaps we're being a little mean in our assessment of Andy Carroll - some of the saves to deny him have been really quite good, and after all, gettting shots on target is a great way to score (if they're off you can't score...)
andy's issue is his heading can be erratic. sometimes he misses by miles and then sometimes he's on target but at the keeper. I think if he sharpens up he should get some more for sure.
I agree that too much criticism is going towards Andy Carroll. He isn't doing too bad, his touch is a little poor at times but when your not getting much match time that is bound to creep in. As you say, he has had a few a wonder saves against him not to mention hitting the woodwork 2 or 3 times. It's not like we wern't winning games he played in because we were, but I also understand we have a good squad and Kenny will pick players dependant on opposition. Hope he gets the nod against Villa.
