A return to The Brit to hopefully end a run of 1 win in 12 premier league games, the Fortress is not what it used to be and this could arguably be Tony Pulis’s biggest game. The stats suggest a draw and there is very little to separate us in the recent meetings. If there was ever a game in which our past traditional strong(ish) home form was needed – this is it – who would have thought we would be looking at this game as a six pointer? Having only scored 6 goals in our last 12 and not scoring in our last 2 home games, our fundamental issue of not scoring goals has potentially raised its ugly head at the worst stage of the season! LAST 10 Premier League Games: 1 Wins; 2 Draws; 7 Losses: Points (5 from 30) LAST 39 Premier League Games: 9 Wins; 17 Draws; 13 Losses: Points (44 from 117) Aston Villa Form Guide: Aston Villa currently sitting in 18th place on 30 points (-26GD) - coming off a home loss against Liverpool. They have won 2 of their last 3 games, have taken 4 points from their last 2 away games and have scored 6 goals in their last 3 away games. Both Villa and Wigan are making a fight for the last premier league place and scoring goals. I am going for a home win. Although Villa have goals in them and play better away, I think we are just too strong and will grind out a positive result. I think this a massive game in Stoke City's history and could go down as the game that made or broke us, so I think a massive effort from the players and fans will get us the result we need. I almost hopeful that TP will play a more positive formation/style, rotate a couple of out of form players and get a couple of wingers into the game? For me we have to have go at this one, with not scoring in our last 2 home games and only 6 goals in our last 12 prem games sitting back wont get us a result. I just pray that TP wont think a draw is the way to go, although I would take that now if offered and keep the 4 point gap.
For me I want a stoke performance like the first home game back in the prem against villa. In fact I think it would do no harm showing the, team that game and show them what it ment to be a stoke player back then and what can be achieved when we put are minds to it. I think we can win but we must go for it str8 from the start
Good idea that R&W, For me this is a must win game, we have stagnated without picking points up and need a result to clear any jitters.
0-0 , barring blatant off-side allowed to stand , penalty , own-goal or as a result of an absurd deflection , or other bizarre incident , for example the beach-ball goal , S/land. against L'pool.
I think this is a must win game Smither's.. because a 4pt gap between Villa and ourselves IMO simply won't be enough. We have Utd the following week so let's just go for the win. No if's but's or maybe's. If we win cos the ball went in off the refs backside I care less guys. I just hope Ether's is fit and up for it too!
Great atmosphere , exciting finish but ,dare i say it , did we really deserve all 3 points. Sidibe header (if you could call it that) ran down his own back hit his arse and went in. Brilliant , will go down in the anals of stoke folklore. Three things we did have then was a good winger (Lawrence) , a weapon that premiership teams hadn't faced for a long while ,Rorys throw , which always got the crowd going and put the jitters into the opposing team( Shottons throw-in isn't a patch on Rory's and the crowd never respond to it), and Fuller (Ricardo Fuller , Citys No 10) . 5 year plan and all that , if i was Villa i'd rather be playing the current stoke attack ( ????) than the one they faced then.
Away win from me I'm afraid! I am not being negative, just a realistic attitude from the the lack of performance, desire, call it what you will from Pulis and the team. They have forgotten how to win a game of football - it starts INSIDE THE HEAD, got that Pulis!!!!!
Im hoping for a draw (cant see us winning TBH), it will be 0-0 I think, but if one side is to win I think it will be Villa, we just cant score goals anymore.
Iv'e gone for a draw as the most likely result simply because our current form is poor and we cannot seem to be able to score. That said, Villa can be poor at the back so to attack them may allow us to create chances. It is a must-win game so I desperately want us to go all out for the 3 pts. If we lose then who knows what will happen? Come on Stoke. Remember Liverpool on Boxing Day and get that win!!
Going for a boring game of chess with either side creating very little. Villa will see this as a winnable game and Stoke will be trying too hard not to lose. Lambert's game plan will be to try and hit us on the break with the fast young talent he has at his disposal. Pulis won't have a clue where his goals are going to come from and will start with misfiring Crouch, headless chicken Walters, championship at best Whelan, League one at a push Shotton and no wingers with flair or passion! I would put 3 strikers on for this game and go 4-3-3 but Pulis won't!!
Waddo Three forwards? I said the same thing to my mates this morning mate.. looks like Ether's is a doubt, Pennant is AWOL or wherever Pulis sent him so why not.
...and kightly is out of favour/form. That leaves Walters, Shotton and/or Jerome on the wings. I agree with others, given that we have no wing oprtions available, go with Walters, Jones & Jerome upfront and have Nzozni, Adam & A Another in the midfield.
I think if we score first we will lose: Can we really prevent Benteke from scoring (without leaving Bent/Agbonlahor on his own) if Villa are forced to attack? Unless we score in the 89th minute or something
"With one point gained from their last five games and only one win in 12, Stoke have plummeted to the fringe of the fight to stay up. Lose this one and they'll be right in the thick of it. I have seen enough quality from Aston Villa to make me think that they'll stay up. If my confidence is to be proved right, however, they MUST show more steel in mind and body at the back. They'll need it at the 'Bearpit Britannia' Winger Matthew Etherington is Stoke's only fitness doubt for the visit of Aston Villa. Etherington is nursing groin and back complaints which caused him to miss last week's defeat at Everton. Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark could miss a second successive game with a shoulder injury. Darren Bent is available after an ankle injury and virus, and Brett Holman has recovered from the hamstring strain that sidelined him last weekend. MATCH PREVIEW When a relegation scrap is talked about, someone will almost always mention 'that team'. You know the one. Seemingly safe all season and never even mentioned as being in trouble - until the last few weeks. Well, Stoke are in danger of being 'that team'. With one point gained from their last five games and only one win in 12, The Potters have plummeted to the fringe of the fight to stay up. Lose this one and they'll be right in the thick of it. The problem seems to be what the problem has always been for Stoke in the Premier League - scoring goals. The lowest scorers last season are again bottom of the pile when it comes to finding the net, and have had just a single Jon Walters penalty to cheer in their current dismal five-game run. LAWRO'S PREDICTION please log in to view this image please log in to view this image Mark Lawrenson Football Analyst "The Potters are usually quite good against weaker opponents in that they seem to be able to identify their soft centre which for Villa, as we know, is in defence." Read Lawro's full prediction and score The hard-working Walters has done his bit with nine scored (six in the league) from his various positions played, but the others in forward positions might need to fire in a few to see Stoke safe. Peter Crouch has scored once in 25 games since September. Kenwyne Jones hasn't bagged a league goal in 2013. Cameron Jerome only ever seems to score as a substitute. Michael Owen hasn't been fit. Villa's Achilles heel is on the other foot. They haven't shut an opposition out in 20 games now. Given the stats, it's perhaps not surprising that the last team to fail to score against them was Stoke! I've seen Paul Lambert's team a lot this season, and have seen enough quality to make me think that they'll stay up. Certainly going forward they've got better as the season's gone on, with Gabby Agbonlahor now joining Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann amongst the goals. If my confidence is to be proved right however they MUST show more steel in mind and body at the back. They'll need it at the 'Bearpit Britannia'.
