Would anyone else like to see us try to sign him in the summer? Apparently he and Houllier don't get on and he's looking for a move, would he be a realistic target for us? I appreciate a lot of people on here won't be too keen on this as he's a smog but I think he's a cracking player and he would probably be available for about £8m. Thoughts?

Houllier seems to have ****ed off a lot of people since he came into that club like, what the hell is going on in there god only knows. I do like downing as a player though just a shame hes a smog/mackem hybrid dirty bugger as pointed out by CBP.

£8m? Really? I wouldn't want to spend that much on him if he's out of favour and he'll be 27 by the time we get him.

I think he's a good player though (very underrated) and he'd be useful given that he's a left footed midfielder (Ben Arfa being the only other one we have). It depends what kind of system Pardew is thinking of playing, Downing has played on the right for Villa, which HBA may well do for us. If Downing is just going to be backup to Jonas and HBA I'd rather give Ferguson the extra games.

Too many if's and but's for me, he's definitely an option though. <ok>

His heart wouldn't be in it if he came to us.

Oh and the Smog thing doesn't bother me. Carroll was a Geordie and ****ed off at the first opportunity, it doesn't matter to me that much where players are from any more, although English players may be worth slightly more now due to the home grown rule.

Exactly, Adam Johnson is a Geordie/SMB (depending on what you read) and he played his heart out for the smogs. There are other examples - Lee Clark, Steve Howie etc - it doesn't make any difference really.

Not bothered where Downing comes from, he's a good player and if he wanted to play for us I would support him.

  12. A shame because it would be a great deal. I doubt we'd turn down a good deal for Nzogbia, despite the fact that he's a twat.

Wouldn't mind the lad, he can cross, shoot and altough not lightning ain't the slowest either. The boro thing wouldn't bother me a jot, would just remind the dirty smog rats what they used to have (still not that much!!!!)

<laugh> Aye I'd take Zog back, not arsed if a player is a prick or not to be honest as long as he performs. After all we have Stevie T, Barton and Ireland in our squad!
