Not sure where he'd be played, centrally I wouldn't take out Barton or Nolan for him, and he's not the same kind of player as Tiote whom he thus wouldn't replace either. Wouldn't look good for Guthrie if he moves.

He's a good player but where will we play him?

The only player he could replace is Nolan who has been on fire this season and i'm not sure if he can play on the wing. He's not going to come just to sit on the bench.

Really not keen on this lad, but if its a choice between him and Michael 'i love duff' Johnson as is speculated in the same article, then its the lesser of 2 evils as far as i'm concerned

It all depends on what deal it is - if it's a loan to buy deal (in the ben arfa mould) that it could be a good buy. He's lost his way at villa but if he can recover his man city form it could be decent. He may not necessarily be a starter but we need to bulk up our squad a touch.

Agreed spidermag, he is another body, just not a neccessarily good one. Dont we need a winger more right now though?

To be honest Ireland is more TECHNICALLY gifted than Nolan but still can't compare with him in terms of being a ''proper'' pro with a great attitude, a leader on and off the pitch, is a true fighter, his goals ratio is excellent for a midfielder and we seem to play worst(most of the times) without him, so he's REALLY crucial to the team and is our captain fantastic without a doubt.

Don't mind Ireland but wouldn't replace him with anyone in the current starting line up(unless he does a ''Barton'' and plays LM or something like that)... a quality player on his day but unfortunately it hasn't worked out for him City but check this out for skill and technical ability :

If it's a loan with a view to buy I say why not, if he's rubbish and doesn't pull his wait he can go but he was brilliant at city. We really need a right winger I hope we have someone lined up, it doesn't look to promising very quiet. No news Is Good News i suppose

we need a right winger/defensive midfielder and he doesnt cover that. Don't see why we'd be after him to be honest, but once stuff makes it to nufc.com it's usually got some substance

Local Midland papers say Villa not releasing Ireland which might be a good thing for the Toon

Ireland would be a smart signing especially if on loan. it will give us more depth and will take the pressure off the likes of Nolan and Barton who we are needing to play the full 90 minutes for most of our games. Ireland will give us more options, and for me personally the likes of Smith and Guthrie dont fill me with much confidence when they have had to step in. so if ireland is on loan then why not.

Is it my imagination but did he play upfront for Man City a few games when they had some injuries? (in the days before they had 37 strikers on their books)

Houllier confirmed midfielder Ireland will not be leaving the club during the current transfer window.

The former Manchester City man is currently sidelined with a knee injury but has struggled to make an impression under Villa's French boss.

Houllier said: "Will Ireland still be here in February? Oh, yes. Do I see him going anywhere? No.

I hope this isn't true. Look at his back for **** sake. He's been criticised by his gaffer for being lazy, he has a knee ligament injury, he's overpaid, overrated. Look what he drives:

He encapsulates everything that's wrong with modern football.

I actually like that car ^

Admit AG, he's more gifted than ANY of our midfielders apart from Barton. He's technique is brilliant and when on form a top class player.

    Let's not forget this http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/6995114.stm
I personaly hate the guy, but if we get him on loan and he returns to his great Man City form then I think he would be a very decent signing.
All this news of him not coming is for the best though IMO.

Kranjcar and Van Aanholt would be enough IMO <badger>
