Have to say he has been an absolutely ridiculous player for them. They've had some decent teams around him in his time, but never a top class one. He has dragged them to trophies on his own. I can see it having a similar impact as Shearer's departure for us. They have more money to cope of course. I assume he will be heading to the US. Good on him, he has fully earnt it. Still good enough to play in any of Europes top leagues if he fancied it.

Liverpool are going to miss his drive, nowhere as good without him, must be getting a nice final pay day in the USA.

I think Rodgers must face some criticism if he has anything to do with him wanting out, they've never seemed to have the best relationship, Liverpool are weaker in many many ways with him gone.

It's strange you know. I was just thinking the other night when Liverpool pumped Swansea 4-1 that it was the best I had seen Liverpool play in ages... Gerrard was on the bench.

Steven Gerrard has been planning this for a while now and fair play to him. Retiring from International football was the first obvious sign he was looking for his final huge contract in the U.S.

The desperation we saw from him during last season to win the title makes even more sense now. It was the only honour he never won for Liverpool.

Great player and a club legend but I have a feeling that Liverpool will be just fine without him <ok>

Easily one of the best English players ever. Gave everything for his club. Not many who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and drag his team through like he has done over the years.

Sorry but I'm sort of with them! For me he's been the best English attacking midfielder of his generation.
But like John Barnes before him, he never really repeated his class with England.
    A truly top class player.

He's not retired mate, he's just going to the MLS or a European club for a last big pay day (he apparently wasn't happy with the terms on offer from Liverpool).
Lampard leaving Chelsea or Beckham leaving Real Madrid didn't dominate the news like Gerard has.
God help the media when he actually retires.
As a player he was one of the greats. Not world class as he didn't do it for England at tournaments or for more than one club consistently in the CL, but a top, top player.
As a person.. I can't get the incident of him chinning a DJ and giving it the 'do you know who I am?' out of my mind I'm afraid.

Not sure about the relevance of any off the field issues but my opinion is that he is the best player England has produced in the last 20 years, maybe an argument for Scholes too but still think Gerrard was more 'complete'. When you talk about players that can do everything, he's the kind of player you think of (or was the kind of player in the mid 00's). If he'd gone to Chelsea or Real Madrid and collected a few more trophies and played with better players people would give him even more credit, but he's played in a lot of bang average teams and still shone, which is testament to just how good he really was in his pomp, gonna miss Stevie G in the prem personally!
