When we first signed him what did you think? Personally I wasn't excited about his signature and Baldocks moved pretty much over shadowed Davies.............. But wow. What a striker, Take a look at his stats Played 14 Games (10 as a sub!) Scored 8 He has scored now, 8 in 9 games. Maybe a bit early but how do we compare him to previous strikers such as Maynard Pitman Baldock To me I don't think we can compare him to maynard yet unless he scores more than 20, Can't see it with him being in and out of the side constantly. Miles better than pitman and alongside Baldock he looks great. If we can get Sammy scoring and tighten up that defence relegation won't even enter our minds.
i thought he'd be a very good signing everything i read said he would be a good signing and they weren't wrong
Thing is, that has always been the issue since Hull City struck the winner at Wembley. I could see back then that our back two were in need of a class infusion, and Carey is 4 years older now. Fontaine has never done it for me, and it is a shame we couldn't have taken Southampton's money off them. We need to invest a sum of cash in a pair of centre backs asap, and a genuine defensive midfielder in the Cisse mould. Cisse made us hard to beat. But this is all well documented and acknowledged by pundits of this board so i'm not surprising anyone
I have a feeling that Wilson (the Liverpool one) might be signed with a move in mind. Either that or it's a coincidence that his loan ends just as te window opens. Danns would be an awesome signing but, much as want to see it, I just cannot see it happening. On Davies, I was gobsmacked that Derby didn't put up more of a fight to keep him TBH. If we are going to play one up front, I have to ask why we signed Sammy though? If we are going to play 2 up top we need some consistency in Del's selections. Davies does look some player!
Simple - great speed of thought, aggression and attacks the ball (and everything), in short - better than this division... When we sort ourselves out, Davies and Baldock will be a strike partnership to fear...
perhaps JGF may be able to answer this- with 14 games played (10 as sub) and 8 goals would Steven Davies have the highest ratio of goals scored to minutes played in the chamionship...
Code: A very very special player. Baldock and Davis wow just got to get them playing together, however I rate stead big time as well.
When they signed him I was worried he might be another Steve Brooker as he undoubtedly had ability but also a really bad injury record. So far he has been way above what I expected - a real class act. People seem to think Del isn't starting him because he isn't 100% fit - if so I guess there is still that slight worry about him. But at the moment - WOW what a player! I agree about Baldock - why have we bought him if we can't play 2 up front? That was basically why WHam let him go - Sam wanted to play 1 UP. I'm sure DEL told Baldock he was going to play with 2 UP and that was partly why he came so he must be a bit fed up now. I think Del wants to play 4-4-2 long term but it won't work with the current midfield so there is a bit of a puzzle there for him to sort out. It may be that we have to sacrifice Albert and swap for a new RM who defends more in order to play 2 UP. If we get a big offer for him in January it wouldn't surprise me to see Del go down that route. The idea of Davies and Baldock regularly playing up front with a stronger midfield behind them would be enough for me to balance losing Albert.
With Danns and Albert in midfield we have quality. With Davies and Baldock upfront we have a deadly threat. We need another winger and that Defensive midfielder. The defence seems to be coming along, Bates looks like he could be the answer and we might have another gem in Wilson MKIII then there's the return of Cunningham. Heaton in goal is again another class player............... Why are we so far down the league!
Seems like everyone agrees that Davies is a class act....so why isn't he first on the team sheet every week?
The trouble with playing 2 up front and 2 wingers is that the middle of the pitch is just too weak and gets over-powered by a lot of other teams. We have the talent but the mix isn't right to play them all at the moment. Maybe Bates\Wilson(III) will tighten up the defence and make this more possible? Danns is only here until the Sheff Wed game - hope they can extend his loan until Jan at least. We play Pboro, Sheff Wed and Ipswich in December so it is a key month for us.
away to Sheff wed where we aren't to bad. Ipswich away might as well give them the win. Correct me if im wrong but aren't Ipswich the only team every season we've been in the championship that we have failed to beat? Then there's P'Boro really have to get 3 points from them, but again we can never beat them at our place
We must retain Danns until the end of the season in my opinon. All 3 of those December games are winnable.....and that's what we have to aim for.
I think you will defiantly keep him until January at least. Once Jan comes round we will try and move him on. The only stumbling block you will have is his wages. He is on around 15-20K a week (thanks Sven) He isnt worth that sort of money and no one is going to match it so he might choose to run his contract down. We are in the same boat with Jermaine Beckford aswell (Cheers again Sven). On Davies it was a great finish, he always impressed me when he was playing for the Sheep.
Agree that Danns has made a good start, and £15-20k per week may be difficult - I guess much will depend on whether he wants to play. I sit near the dug-out and Danns celebrated big time when Davies scored the penalty against Blackpool - maybe he has the right attitude I think Davies has a football brain - his all round play looks good as well as the obvious goals
D No Shiny. In our first season in the CC we beat them 2-0 in a grudge match following a 6-1 tonking they dealt us at their place a couple of weeks earlier. I seem to remember it being an ugly gritty game - we were determined to get revenge and managed it amongst loads of fouls and cards!
He's been good, but he's not played enough for us to have a legitimate theory on how good he is. Danns has played once, so forming an opinion on that and how he is our missing link is a bit misguided. All I'll say is that if he acts as the creative midfielder we've needed for the best part of a decade then we'll improve vastly.
