From BBC Website Swansea City boosted in Steven Caulker loan bid Page last updated at 15:24 GMT, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 16:24 UK E-mail this to a friend Printable version Steven Caulker won Bristol City's young player of the award last season Premier League newcomers Swansea City have moved a step closer to the signing of young Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old impressed during a loan season at Bristol City last term but their bid for Caulker to return failed. Robins boss Keith Millen revealed: "We knew Tottenham were keen on getting Steven on loan in the Premier League. "I always felt a Premier League club may come calling and it seems like Swansea have." Swans boss Brendan Rodgers hopes the England Under-21 international will become his second signing since he guided the Welsh club to top-flight promotion. Rodgers signed Watford striker Danny Graham, last season's Championship 24-goal top-scorer, for a club record £3.5m just a week after Swansea beat Reading 4-2 in the Championship play-off final to secure promotion. And Rodgers wants Caulker to bolster his defensive options as the 6ft 3in centre-back would strengthen a back-line that includes Ashley Williams, Garry Monk and Alan Tate. Caulker won Bristol City's young player of the year award last season before suffering a knee cartilage injury that ended his season early in March. Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins admitted last week: "Steven Caulker, yes, is a player Brendan is interested in bringing in and we're actually speaking to Tottenham about that, and we'll hope to perhaps conclude something this week." ********************************************************* Would love NW to stop Swansea getting their hands on this excellent prospect. In fact Steven Caulker is a West London home grown player, brought up in Feltham, West London. Have a particular interest in this young lad, as he started out his career at six years of age at my son's Boys football club, of which I am a coach at - Staines Lammas Youth. Six years there, then went to Brentford, and then onto Tottenham. he was at Bristol City last season, and equalised against us in the 2 -2 draw at Loftus Road. Would be a great loanee for a season... Stan
Clearly you must have some influence with the lad then? Take it he's an Rs fan... . 'Ave a word and call the club Stan, you can see how impatient some of us are getting!!
BrixtonR Steven Caulker had moved on well before my tenure began at Staines Lammas, still we at the club are very proud that he made it to a Premeirship team. Our only player to date that has hit the big time. Have had two of my players already scouted by Chelsea, and they were only six years of age... Would be great if Caulker would come over, at 19 and 6ft 3in he already has experience at Bristol City, and think this will be his last season as a loanee before Harry fast tracks him into Tottenham first team... Stan
It looks like he has signed for the Swans guys, well I hope so we shall see if the club confirms in the next couple of days http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-n.../8349/2/swansea-win-race-sign-spurs-star-loan
Sounds like you've got an interesting set up there Stan. I hope you're able to set some careers in motion during your time at Lammas, you're clearly very keen.
BrixtonR Important that ALL the players, regardless of their ablity get to enjoy the training and matches. Sadly too many coaches, managers, and especially parents at kiddies level TAKE it far too seriously... Too many children are let go at football at a young age, when who knows what they could achieve IF they were given more of a chance.... Stan
Heard tell of such things Stan. The potential for money making has caused unnatural expectation and processing of talented players. Consequently players are indictrinated away from the freedom to exercise the natural skills of the game which is why headstrong Taarabt is so unique these days. After the ages of Best, Giles, Cooke, Marsh, Bowles etc., we had Gascoign and that was about it.
BrixtonR Sadly MONEY had corrupted the youth of todays football, and also the concept of WINNING at any cost. Have had players of eight years of age leave my sons club, because they wanted to play for so called better clubs in my local area.... They sign up for these clubs, but never play....as the clubs are top heavy with players. Surely as a child you want to play regardless of who you're playing for.... Stan
