http://www.lcfc.com/news/article/05...es-his-bow-353627.aspx?pageView=full#anchored .. may have looked like one of the Weasley clan; but a real exponent of the full-back's art ..... Konchesky could do a lot worse than have a look at any video footage he can find. Also, on the footie trivia front - Steve Whitworth gave the club a unique place in British footballing history - how and why??
Not sure if it was his only goal .. but you are correct Moulton .. it being unique because we won the Charity (Community shield) despite not ever having won the League or the FA Cup - Arsenal did the double and played us as we had won the then 2nd division
We beat Liverpool 1-0 ( not Arsenal )they were the cup runners up that year. Played at Filbert street.I remember it well, we should have won by more but Ray Clemence had a blinder in Goal!!
Running - spot on .. my memory might have misplaced the opposition but not the goal .. it was a screamer .. 25 yards or so..
Number 8 in the article below ... and as the photo clearly shows ... 25 yards ... http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/top-10-charitycommunity-shield-matches-1245779
I know that nostagia often has a 'glow' but is it just me who just seems to think that when the likes of Whitworth, Nish and Dennis Rofe played full-back they seemed to play balls with unerring accuracy over 30 yards to our front men? ... i.e very different to the quality I see from full backs today... and did Lenny Glover or John Farrington ever shank a cross or fail to get a corner past the first defender? I don't think so... but then I really fancied Farah Fawcett-Majors and THAT hair ... so I probably have no cred...
Now he was a full back all right foot but pace to burn, and a sliding tackle that started on the penalty spot and hit the player and ball next to the corner flag!! I saw his first game at home to Stoke first cross he made straight to the Doogs head 1-0. Only goal of the game.Shame his only real was success lifting the FA cup with Southampton.
We had some damn fine defenders in that era .. The Tank - Graham Cross ... John Sjoberg - would head everyting even it it was below knee height ... the cultured David Nish ... and the bulldog that was Allan Woollett (our version of Nobby Stiles) a defensive midfield player with no respect for reputations ..
The sideburns that are Rodney Fern. I remember his overhead kick against Brum. One of the finest goals at Filbo
Not actually a unique place - I understand there are two clubs that have done this. Can you name the other?
Initially thought it might be something to do with other double winners ... but perhaps not ... how about Brighton in 1910?
