http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24209802 A good servant to Bristol football - 237 appearances for City and 136 for Rovers I had a couple of chats with Steve over the years - struck me as quite a nice guy who was not "up his self" In terms of ability I always thought a good shot stopper, but could have been better on crosses?
I thought flapper played more for us? funny I was only 'chatting' last week with Steve on twitter as we have the same roots and I'm friends with his Dad.
one of the best shot stoppers i have seen at the mem. but crosses was his weakness for sure. well done phillips on this achievement. showed rovers that it was wrong to let him go.
Crosses was a definite area for improvement along with commanding his area. But a good shot stopper for sure. My son knew him vaguely and they had a few nights out. The funniest story is Phillips being drunk and dropping his kebab... Ok it's not that funny, but it was at the time..
Remember the penalty save against Everton in the cup then the reflex save to keep out the follow up......Nice work Steve!
A bit of a younger David James, great at some point blank stops, and last ditch saves, but a horror show outside his 6 yard box sometimes.... Nice guy though. I heard him on the radio the other day saying he might write a book one day on the reasons he had to leave city and the circumstances why he went to Rovers. Anyone know what that was all about?
'Anyone know what that was all about?' Yes. But it won't be the complete truth, he's looking to stay in the game. Whatever, any player who completes 600 games at pro level deserves huge congratulations. Was sorry to see him leave, but Basso was top drawer. Disappointed Steve for me to say that but we remain and will always be good mates.
Having read his wiki page, it does mention a falling out with GJ, a number of many players who have by the sounds of it. Trundle, Orr, Sproule, Brooker, Basso, I've even heard Chris Weale has had a run in with him on one occasion in training, but they kissed and made up.
