BRISTOL financiers Peter Hargreaves and Steve Lansdown are both billionaires, according to the latest edition of the Sunday Times Rich List.

The founders of city stockbrokers and financial services company Hargreaves Lansdown are ranked second and third in the South West regional table, with fortunes of £2.39 billion and £1.45 billion respectively.

Mr Hargreaves recently stepped down as chief executive of the Anchor Road-based business but retains a £2.24 billion stake. The net worth of his assets rose by £867 million in the past year, according to the newspapers' researchers.

Last December he gifted shares in the operation worth just under £1 million to charity.

Mr Lansdown, who now lives in Guernsey, owns Bristol City and Bristol Rugby through his Bristol Sport operation.

In March he sold £200 million of shares in Hargreaves Lansdown.

The list shows his net worth rising by £550m in the past year, taking him to billionaire status.

The 26th annual Sunday Times Rich List is published tomorrow in a special 116-page issue of The Sunday Times Magazine, profiling the 1,000 richest individuals and families in the UK and the wealthiest 250 in Ireland.

The list is based on identifiable wealth, including land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies. It excludes bank accounts, to which the paper has no access.

    Also on the list are:

*Successful businessman and Bath Rugby chairman Bruce Craig, who was educated at St Brendan’s Grammar School in Brislington.

*Sir David McMurtry is the founder of Renishaw, the hi-tech engineering firm based in Wotton-under-Edge.

Sir David owns the stunning ultra-modern mansion Swinhay House, near North Nibley, which featured in the last series of hit TV show Sherlock as Appledore, the lair of cunning villain Charles Magnusson.

*Bristolian businessman Michael Cannon, 75, who was born in Bedminster and left school barely able to read and write before going into the licensing trade and founding four pub chains.

*Andrew Nisbet and family, of Bristol-based catering supplier Nisbets.
