8 assists and 4 goals in this league this season thus far. Second highest chance creator in the league, too. He's still a great player and a great captain, hope he carrys on this form. Well in Stevie.
I just find it hilarious how so many people (including people on this forum) were writing him off and demanding he be dropped because he was past it, lazy, slow and had nothing to offer...
Reminds me a bit of Pirlo at the Euros but much more mobile. Give him space and he'll still rip a team to shreds with his passing.
Great tonight and has been great other than the odd game throughout the season, I think some have struggled with the change in his game so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
I think he has been poor in a fair few games this season. I don't mind admitting that. However he is definately on his game now and boy do we need him!! He's like an aircraft carrier with his long range assists!
He is now top of the assists table Superb effort. He has been playing deeper than most players on the list yet he has more assists than anyone in the PL, that means he is ahead of players who are apparently world class like Rooney, Mata, Hazard & Cazorla
MITO, MITO! Where for art thou MITO? No don't tell me your going to say "he'd be even better if he weren't so lazy".
I know what catches me with Gerrard and why sometimes I come out and say he is poor ( he has had poor games as bow mentioned) is that I am so used to that high standard Gerrard has held for so many years. It is just strange to not see him boss everyone, every single game. Really glad he is turning it on and like many have said we still need our captain fantastic.
It's not the criticism of individual performances that I have an issue with mate, he has had a few poor games this year and a few very average ones. It's people saying he's finished or that he should be dropped for Shelvey or Suso or Sahin that gets on my tits. Gerrard is a class apart when on form and he is still an inspiration to those around him when he plays like he did tonight. I said months ago the key to BR getting the team playing better was to find a way to get Gerrard settled and playing well. If he can get the best out of him we'll be a much better team for it. The fact is that so far during his career he has had to adapt to a different style and position every time we chop a manager (and every time he plays for England). Can you think of many other one club players who've been asked to change their style so many times during a career and end up adapting so well every single time? I can't.
As I said on the transfer thread, I would love to see this after January...... ----------Gerrard/Suso/Shelvey------------ Sturridge/Sterling-----Suarez/Gameiro-----Jeffren/Downing The first name being the starter and the second and third ones the back up. Would be really good and useful.
With that being said, I feel we do need to start seeing Suso in the AM, no.10 role. Not just thrown in but when he comes in, don't sling him out wide ( he can just about do a job there) but he needs to be in his best position.
There is a clear difference between writing someone off and questioning their all round contribution. Gerrard's attacking play as been great all season, it was his defensive duties that I wasn't happy with. He did much better tonight
Suso just needs more time to develop and study the game as a whole. Those sorts of attacking midfield roles are best played by guys with an inherent understanding of the pace and flow in any given game. He will grow into that sort of role in the future if he keeps developing at the rate he has done so far. He's got great feet and a good eye but as yet he is still very raw and now isn't the time to push him too quickly IMO. BR's used him quite sensibly so far this year, enough exposure to the first team to keep him hungry but not too much as to let him believe he's already made it. It's also useful for a young player to play different roles firstly to take them out of their comfort zones and secondly to gain an understanding of how players in different positions play. I think Suso's only barrier now to becoming a great player is himself. If he keeps his attitude right and has a willingness to keep learning then he can become a really excellent player.
