    Boss confident on Sterling contract

    http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/boss-confident-on-sterling-contract

Brendan Rodgers is confident Raheem Sterling will commit his long-term future to the club.

The 17-year-old won his first England cap last week before starring in Saturday's 3-0 win over Wigan - the side against whom he earned his debut just eight months ago.

Rodgers believes the youngster could become a Liverpool great over the coming years.

"Raheem is in a real good place here," said the boss.

"He has been given an opportunity here this season and he is thriving on it and enjoying the work. He will tie himself to a new contract because he wants to be here and he can be a great here at this football club.

"The message is very simple: we are trying to move the club forward over the next couple of years and there will be a little bit of pain along the way but there are not too many teams in the Premier League who are starting with three teenagers and he is one of our outstanding players.

"We want him to continue to grow, and others. And why would you want to leave one of the biggest clubs in world football? So it's a no brainer."

Sterling claimed two assists as Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven games.

Rodgers added: "Coming off the back of his international debut and playing 86 minutes as well and then coming back here and playing 90 minutes and looking like he could play another 90 minutes at the end of the game... It's just amazing.

Good news, we've now tied down Suso, Suarez, Agger, Skrtel and Sterling recently to long-term contracts which is really good business, although contracts don't mean much nowadays.

I mean in terms of keeping players they don't mean much. They do play a big part in transfer fees and such, but the first season of the contract aside, if the player wants to leave they'll most likely leave.

Downing 70k and Cole 90k. It certainly is! 30k for a long deal of 5 years and increasing as he improves and gets older, can't complain surely.

theres no news here, only opinion... until he actually signs up this si just wishful.

and frankly i'm not very pleased with the sentiment in terms of how much the kid is being used. he will burn out without question if we don't slow the hell down and let him rest a bit. He could easily hit 50 games this year and for a 17 year old that could be damaging.

Lets protect the boy as well as develop him so in 3 years time he will be the biggest thing in the prem.

oh and contracts do mean something... they mean the difference between selling for 30mil and selling for 8 mil (owen) even selling for 6mil and selling for 12 mil (dempsey)

Had levy not got modric to sign a stupid deal the guy would be a chav today and the spuds would have not got that big cheque from real would they? he'd have gone to chelksi on a cheap deal.

Rodgers is sounding a bit desperate for Sterling to sign, ok the kid has been thrown in at the deep-end this season and coped well but his head might now be up his own arse after some of the rave reviews hes had and his full England cap, if he signs for someone else he might revert to warming the bench instead of staying here and being a regular first teamer.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers claims Raheem Sterling would be "foolish" not to sign a new contract with the club.
The 17-year-old winger has made a big impact at Anfield this season and negotiations are continuing over the England international's first professional contract.
Rodgers has indicated that Sterling should appreciate that Liverpool

is the best place for him to develop and he should not jeopardise that with his demands.
"He has played more games than he could have dreamed of this season, both in the Premier League and the Europa League," Rodgers told reporters.
"If you are 17 and are playing regularly, you would be very foolish not to commit yourself very quickly."
    Brendan RodgersQuotes of the week

"So I would think, if I am Raheem Sterling and his agents, I would look to tie it up very quickly.
"This contract won't be the biggest contract of his life. It is when he actually achieves something.
"If you are 17 and are playing regularly, you would be very foolish not to commit yourself very quickly. I am confident it will be sorted out soon."
Rodgers has been keen to keep the talented youngster's feet on the ground for some time, saying in September: "I want to manage the expectations of the kid.
"The last thing we need is Sky Sports coming up with a yellow bar saying he has signed a five-year contract after playing two games."

We could without all this nonsense, I just hope he signs and soon so he can concentrate of footy again.

He seems pretty down to earth and I hope he's not asking for huge money, with the way he's playing then bigger and bigger contracts will come in time.

His agent will no doubt have been whispered to by other clubs & he'll have a figure in mind based on what the likes of City or Chelsea have intimated that they'll pay & it'll be a damn sight more than £20K per week.

It's a total disgrace that some young buck who's played a handful of first team games should be 'rewarded' with a multi million pound contract, but that's football in 2012 & given his age & contract situation you're going to have to stump up here imo. He's not a local lad so he'll have no sense of real loyalty, your only real hold over him is guaranteed first team football.

Sterling is an absolute scrote of a person I've heard- A real ****e at school and seriously full of himself followed up by getting 3 girls up the duff and assault (all heresay I admit). Thank god it doesn't show on the pitch where his attitude is very good and his work rate is top notch. I guess his agent will be the one being the dick head over contract though

He would be stupid to go to Chelsea or city, where he would disappear like any other youth prospects. I agree though, I just hope his head isn't turned by money. A sensible deal with annual rises due to improving and good performances etc would be suitable.

in the end if the clubn look after him he can either go chasing a fast buck "americanism" or he can realise that at 17 he's not all that, not doing that much in our cause in each game and is lucky to be starting so many. if he realises that and even signs a 4 year deal he can move at 20 if he's a merc.

simple... use us to make yourself a huge name then move if thats what you want, the power is yours but move now and frankly chelsea and city will just swallow him whole.

He should stay at LFC I think at the moment It looks like Man C buy players just not for other teams to have them or to fill their home quota up with no Intention to play them Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell for example? Rodwell's played a few times but how did Sinclair seriously think he was going to be a regular there???

LFC suits him at the moment he should stay...

I agree totally, but if his agent is bending his ear with " I could get you £90K per week at Club 'X' " then he'll see that as his current market value & whilst the right advice would be what you've said there, the agents advice is likely to be quite different (given he'll be paid a %age of the total contract value btw)

100% certainty he will sign. He won't be at his peak for 5 years, so he has plenty of time to learn of some great players and still move somewhere else when he is 22 and then be getting £150,00 a week. He won't get anywhere as much game time at any other big club. If he moved to London, how would he see his kids <whistle>

I do hope he is intending to sign and it i just the papers making him look like an ungrateful money grabbing little mercenary..

At the same time, if FSG would just compliment our youth with some world class talent, then we wouldnt be having this discussion as he would have signed already imo.
