As some of you may know already, women have been playing football for at least three years now, and some of it is recorded, not for men's amusement but to showcase the 'talent' that women have while playing football. I was naturally sceptical, but I have now seen the U Tube clip of Stephanie Roach scoring what looks like a genuinely good goal. I have checked and its not a fake, its no Loch Ness Monster type video, its not men dressed up as women either, it did happen. But really, is it deserving of being voted the best goal ever? Is it better than a Van Basten or a Leaburn? What do you think, genius or pandering to the ladies?
Haven't seen it - but where was it voted best goal ever? I can't imagine it being better than Claus Jensen vs Arsenal or Chris Powell vs Spurs..
It's down as one of the 3 best of the year, alongside Van Persie's diving header and James Rodriguez's chest down and volley both in the World Cup. Personally I'd have it second behind Van Persie's header because of the spontaneous improvisation and perfect execution, but it's well worth a look on the Beeb.
Sorry I misread the award - probably due to shock. It is as FHB says down as one of the best three this year. My argument is - would a professional have had time to do that?, It is a quite stunning goal I will give her that, but it's a playground type goal, I scored similar playing for pub teams with a hangover and a cigarette hanging out my gob.
Trouble is... Its a great goal but also a fluke in my eyes like all three... Majority of shots like those three would go well over the bar (i.e. Get 'em all to do it again and just watch the terrible efforts) For me the great goals are the team ones, the pass and moves etc...
I actually think the first touch was bad and then she reacted well. But it is better than James Rodriguez's.
When I saw the title of this thread I thought that Roland had signed another Belgium Network player for us
One team goal from us that has always stuck in my memory was the one touch football vs Spurs (bet that made Typical happy), where Bartlett scored the diving header. That and I think against Preston in League One.
That diving header from Danny Hollands (Was it a Wiggins assist?) when we beat them 5-2 was a class end to a great bit of team play, one of the goals of the season
That's exactly what I was thinking of!! I remember it being such a good goal at the time - it definitely didn't get enough credit. Whilst I agree team goals are generally more impressive, I've always had a thing for a brilliant volley. A few of Scholes's goals over the years rank in my top 5-10. And Claus Jensens lob against Arsenal will probably feature in there (I preferred it to Barlett vs Leicester personally)
Is there any such thing as "The Best Goal Ever"..? The question is so subjective as to render the outcome meaningless. Sure, the girl scored a good goal, but I've seen better goals scored in Charlton Park on Sunday mornings (some of them past me...!!). As for women's football in general, I'm all for it. I'm glad that England is getting with the programme, albeit belatedly. As usual, we resist anything that looks remotely progressive where women's sport is concerned, and once we realise that the rest of the world is going ahead without us and actually doing it rather well, we condescend to join in only to realise we're twenty years behind everybody else. The Americans, Swedes, Germans (especially the Germans) and even the Japanese are light years ahead of us in the women's game. It's not the fault of the British female players, it's because of the lack of investment, the absence of any genuine professional structure and the entrenched British attitude that football is a man's game and women should restrict their football activities to nipping down to buy the pies and getting 'em out for the lads. At best, the British male regards women's football as a joke and quietly hopes it fails dismally. The last thing a British male wants to see is a successful women's team that has greater (comparable) success than the men's team. Heavens forbid the women should ever win an international tournament..... something that would be conspicuously beyond the abilities of the men's team ....... Ohnononononono We wouldn't want that, now would we..? I hope the girls do well. Good luck to them, I say. As for "The Greatest Goal Ever", my old man scored one like that when we played in our back garden back in the 60's. It beat my kid brother in goal all ends up. What a shame there were no mobile phone cams to get a video of the event at the time.
