http://www1.skysports.com/football/...Stekelenburg-reveals-Fulham-move-fell-through Stekelenburg said he was flying to London when his agent Rob Jansen informed him the move was off because Roma could not agree terms with Fiorentina's Emiliano Viviano. What I don't get is we were after him in the summer and it fell through at the last minute. Now the transfer window opened on Jan 1st, so what happened this time to make Roma leave it to the last minute to find out they couldn't get a replacement ? Will we go after him in the summer again, or will other teams now be on the alert to jump in.
Super Brian, the whole thing was totally unprofessional on Roma's behalf. I feel for Stekelenberg, he must feel like he is having the p**s taken out of him. Without wanted to sound too much like a stirrer, this could be the scenario. As you have stated Viviano was due to be his replacement, he plays for Fiorentina. We nicked Berbatov from Fiorentina's finger tips, may be this was a bit of pay back. Whatever the reason it is a shame for us and him. That said we have a quality keeper in Schwarzer. Yes he is not playing to his very high standards but with extra cover for the defence he may not be needed so much.
Probably because he's not Dutch. I don't see why we couldn't sign him and insert a recall clause. If Roma's number one gets injured and Stek is recalled, we have Schwarzer and Etheridge in reserve. The whole deal baffles me.
Personally I don't rate Butland as highly as some. It is a massive gamble with young goalkeepers that they won't be the superstar you expect (e.g. Robinson, Foster, Carson). Besides, he wouldn't have been playing for us until the summer anyway. You can't have a recall clause in an international loan deal, as per FIFA player registration rules.
Could be that Roma realised that their "No. 1" keeper is pretty crap. Roma 2 â Cagliari 4 (Serie A, February 1, 2013) (Alternative Highlights) (Longer Highlights) Radja Nainggolan finished into the roof of the net to give Cagliari the lead. Francesco Totti equalised with a cleaver free-kick, sneaking it in low and hard at the near side. Roma fell behind again through an incredible own golazo by Roma stopper Mauro Goigoechea who dropped the ball into his net like a hot potato after having it under control. Marco Sau made it 3-1 Cagliari with a solid header. Francesco Pisano made it 4-1 as the Roma defence fell apart at the seams. Marquinho grabbed a late consolation for Zemanâs men. In this article a Roma Director puts their side of the story. Nothing new really about the reason for the deal collapsing. What is interesting though, is that we increased our bid for Stekky which at least goes to show that the Board are prepared to back Jol. http://www.insidefutbol.com/2013/02/02/roma-sporting-director-franco-baldini-explains-maarten-stekelenburg-to-fulham-deal-collapse/78555/
The agent of AS Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has ruled out reviving a deal with Fulham. The Dutchman was blocked on transfer deadline day last month from joining the Cottagers by Roma management. "This is now a closed issue," Jansen declared yesterday
