Has had to retire as his son has cancer. Puts things into perspective really, it had to be done and credit to Steed. Always rated him as a player and he can look back at a pretty successful career in the Premier League.

Thoughts are with his son, himself and the rest of his family.

Me and Chappaz have both commented on the Sunderland board about this, no one deserves what him and his family must be going through right now.

My mam had breast cancer, she got through it but unless you experience it close up, for example to a loved one, I don't think people can understand the pain they go through.

Times will be hard for his son but with the right treatment and care, hopefully all will be ok.

Its the fact that it can kill someone so young that makes it so sad, I mean no one deserves to lose a child let alone someone at Malbranque's ages should the worst happen.

I always rated him very highly as a player, one of the few I would have took from Sunderland given the chance, always got a lot of assists and worked hard on the pitch.

Hope everything turns out OK for him and his family <ok>

Mackem connection or no mackem connection, I wouldn't wish cancer on anyone.

It's even sadder when it happens to young people with their whole lives ahead of them.

Remember Adam Stansfield? He died early about a year ago. Thank god John Hartson and Bryan Robson didn't die whilst having it.

Sympathy goes out to Stead and his family.

Lost my dad to cancer 10 years ago and my niece in America got leukemia (Cancer of the blood) while being treated she caught a virus which has caused her to go blind and to have siezures because the virus attacked the brain. She has had to have 40% of her brain removed to stop the seizures which were basically killing her.
The good thing is she has recovered from the leukemia and though now disabled from the virus is a happy 7 year old kid.

It's a horrible thing to experience when you are so far away and unable to be there for the family, me and my family are going out there in October to see them.

Wish Steads kid a swift recovery with no side effects.

Living abroad has it's disadvantages, you worry how your loved ones are doing back at home in England.
My grandmother died from breast cancer at the age of 53 when I was a young lad so I can't really remember.
But when it came to my gandfather dying it was the most hotrible experiance I've ever had to live through. No goodbye, nothing. It was like the world was ending and there was nothing we could do about it.

Good luck to Steed's son. There are miracles, like the legend John Hartson. Brilliant recovery.

Cancer is a terrible disease, my grandmother died of it when I was younger, and my dad around a month ago. He fought it off once but the second time it was too much for him. Thoughts are with Steed and his family, they will need each other more than ever at this time.

My thoughts and best wishes go out to Steed and his family. I cant imagine the pain, and the anguish they must be going through at this time.

Puts things into perspective really. Hearing about players of rival clubs, going through traumatic times is never nice. At the end of the day, they're only human. And, no-one deserves this.

Horrible news. My thoughts are with them, can't even begin to contemplate how they must be feeling.

Really wish Steed all the best, as others have said, noone deserves to be put through this. Rivalries and all footballing matters pale into insignificance with a story like this. Hope he pulls through.
