Read a few rumors Bruce is about to drop Joelinton for Gayle, possibly as soon as Palace this weekend if he is fit enough.

What I want want to know is who would you start up top from our selection of strikers.

I've included ASM and Almiron as I've seen some people mentioning them playing up top and both had a little stint in the Rochdale replay up there and a few youth players as well for good measure.

Not looking at wingers/inside forwards who play out wide and cut in, I'm talking through the middle, target men -> poachers, playing of the last shoulder or dropping into the gap between midfield and defense to pick up the ball etc and have given you two choices if you would play with two up top.

Bit of a pointless thread as I'm not sure the majority of them will ever be fit enough to string a couple of games together but thought it'd be interesting to see who people think should be the main man/men leading the line and what formation they would fit into.

I agree though it is a bit like saying: "if he is in good form, Joelinton."

Is this the reality where Joelinton comes off the bench and grabs a brace in a 15min cameo role? We discover he's real ability is as a suber-sub. We use this as a tactic for the rest of the season to push ourselves into Champions League spot.

I think most bookmakers wouldn't predict odds for such freak events tho!

You want to say Carroll, because he's our best. But never fit. You're tempted to say Gayle, but also never fit. Muto's not a striker, neither is Joelinton, Max or Almiron.

I'd be happy with him or Sorensen. They're barely a year or two younger than Joelinton, so not sure why they're not "ready".

I'd go 5-3-2 and play Toure alongside Maximin, with Max being able to drift/float.

3 CB's, Rose/Lazaro as wing backs, no wingers (because wingers + wingbacks is ****ing idiotic), Mongstaff as DM, Songstaff and Bentaleb ahead of him, Maximim just behind Toure (Gayle/Carroll if fit). Even think about swapping a CB for Almiron and going front 3.

All depends what style of play. If we are simply asking who is best suited to playing that lone front role in our squad, its Dwight Gayle all day long and twice on Sunday.

But are Carroll or Gayle ever going to be fit enough to be considered a realistic option?

Essentially it depends how we play. Given Bruce seems to think we are best suited by this 343 (which is more like 541 a lot) then I think Gayle is comfortably the best option. Carroll did a decent job for us but he doesn't offer a genuine goal threat as we don't have anyone who can cross a ball. The link up between Gayle and Almiron in the Wolves game told us all we need to know about who suits this style best.

I actually think Gayle is a lot better than many of our fans think. They judge him on his season under Benitez when we came back up. Playing up front for Rafa was a thankless task and combined with Gayle not being at his best, I think it has given many a skewed picture. If you look back at that season and the one before, despite a poor goal return he was generally pretty good. His intelligent running stretched teams and allowed the likes of Ritchie to play higher up the pitch.

Gayles career though is littered with injuries. The lad probably only manages 20 appearances a season including subs over the last 7 years or so. People say he can't cut in the PL, we will never know because he has rarely played enough games! He only started 27 for Palace in 3 seasons in the PL. 23 for Newcastle and he has scored 21 PL goals. He has countless sub apps though.

If playing up top for Rafa was a thankless task I'd love to know how you'd describe playing upfront for Bruce...

I would go with Gayle and Sorenson for the simple reason that we might as well try something different - we havent got an awful lot to lose.

He probably is but, unlike Joelinton, at least there is an element of doubt there.

Toure does look like a prospect and I'd seriously consider giving him a few games at the end of the season if we are safe and have a good look at him over the summer. Possibly off the bench for the cup games at WBA if the rest aren't fit yet. I'd always hesitate to throw a young lad in halfway through a season but then again you never know could hit the ground running.
