1) Tom Nichols - A lively performance from the frontman and a nice finish for the first goal. 2) Glenn Morris - A decent performance from Morris throughout the 90 minutes, a top save right at the death to preserve the 3 points. 3) Cheye Alexander - Cheye gets 3rd spot for his part in the prevention of the last minute Crewe chance, with his last ditch block.
1. Nichols - worked well - good goal & assist. 2. MacDonald - 'grew' into the game - and provided good support upfront in the 2nd half. 3. Alexander & Morris - mainly for the save towards the final whistle. 4. (( although it could easily be No.1 )) - the 'generous' Crewe defending -- you all know what I mean. Overall, I wasn't hugely impressed with the performance -- very flat -- often negative, with much sideways and backwards movement... Was fortunate to overcome a poor Crewe side - but must do better against 'top' teams..... I was also surprised that Nichols wasn't left 'upfield' when we defended corners . MacDonald was used instead - when, surely he is a more 'defensive' player - at those times when we would have needed this quality ?
Interesting because I didn't see the game, not even on Ifollow, I only saw highlights later, and read through comments on other sources of media, and my selection would have been the same as yours, and in fact now is lol... 1. Nichols 2. MacDonald 3. Morris However, I had an element of doubt before posting my selection, mainly centred around MacDonald, I thought for what I saw he seemed outstanding, but I have to remember I'm only seeing the 'highlights' - Yet comments I read, suggested he was terrible at set pieces, I was left with the impression mainly in the first half? Although not that I always take alot of note of what other supporters always say, because often players get bad reviews, then go to another club and we end up in worse hole than when we started. Hence the last five years or so.
brb - as I always say - I look at the 'bigger' picture in each game... It is true that MacDonald's set pieces were poor -- overhit too many times. I have 'criticised' the overall below par performance throughout most of the team ( not Nichols. ) - but - in the grand scheme of things, MacDonald significantly improved in the 2nd half - and was very much involved in the major incidents - his ball for Nichols' goal was a very intelligent piece of football. .. Morris had little to do - but- at a critical time, pulled off an important save --- and whilst I won't rush to put Alexander in my squad, I respectfully acknowledge his part in keeping the score at 2-1...... Had it not been for that scare at the end of the game, I probably would have put Ehmer as my No.2.... He had an unspectacular game - but - was in control of whatever came his way..... .... I accept that it's mainly about points between now and the end of season... I am fairly sure we'll get more 'negative / defensive' set-ups when we play the top teams - but - I am sure we'd all take a point in these games (( given the dire situation before January. ))..... And I expect a little transfer action in the Summer - to get one or two (( or maybe 3 )), players to make us a Champion winning side...... ..... ps - you should always take note of what I say
I'd probably have MacDonald as one of my must have names on the team sheet, from the current team. But I was the same with players such as Charlie Lee, Barry Fuller, even BIG Ships, oh and that lad from Millwall (forgot his name, last name beginning with F) and many others I've forgotten - I love a player that can mix it up a bit, ok, we might see the odd yellow a few times, but it generally means those type of players are doing their job properly.
First half we were poor. No shots again. . We got gifted opportunity for both goals. We just about shaded it as we had good goal disallowed and few others in second half.
1. Alex Mcdonald, another workmanlike performance in a game where we were not great excellent cross for 1st goal. 2. Tom Nicholas looked lively well taken goal. 3.Glen Morris great block to save an equaliser near the end and reliable throughout as usual. Overall not a great performance but managed an ugly win which is important until we are safe can't see us getting much from Carlisle game unless we improve.
geoffthegills - sloppy reporting !.... It's MacDonald, Nichols, and Glenn Morris... (( I know that gioblues also got one wrong. )) - you wouldn't like it if I wrote your name in 'upper' case !
